A look at the Chiefs offensive personnel groupings for Week 1 vs. the Titans.

The Kansas City Chiefs did not run as many two tight end sets as I thought they would in Sunday's opener against the Tennessee Titans. Travis Kelce, the second tight to Anthony Fasano, had a terrific preseason where he led the Chiefs in receiving yards. Yet he played just 18 snaps on Sunday. And he was still the Chiefs second leading receiver.

"He's young," Andy Reid said of Kelce on Monday, via quotes from the Chiefs, "but he's capable of more than 18 plays. I've just got to make sure I call those plays."

Take a look at the Chiefs offensive personnel groupings for this game. The way to read this is to count the number of backs and number of tight ends. The second one down is "11 personnel" (one back + one tight end = 11), which is what Reid runs the most often. That would usually be Jamaal, Fasano and three receivers.

You have to remember that the Chiefs were losing for a good portion of this game so the numbers will be skewed towards more passing. In a regular game, I would be happy with more two tight end sets. Kelce isn't the blocker that Fasano is so he may not have as much flexibility in personnel groupings.

His Dirkness of AHPKC.com recaps the 26-10 season opening defeat to the Titans with the best and worst moments of the week

FOOTB-AHHHHHHL, WHAT THE HELL?

The Kansas City Chiefs returned to playing meaningful football yesterday ... Sort of.

What a disaster. The suspensions. The injuries, both before and during. The game plan. The in-game coaching. The offensive line. The receivers. The looming schedule. Rich Gannon saying OWfense.

Lets <strike>Remember</strike> Forget The Titans game, while I prematurely celebrate Festivus with my own personal Airing of Chief Grievances.

I GOT A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH YOU PEOPLE, NOW YOU'RE GONNA ... oop, there goes my Achilles.

The Best and Worst w/ His Dirkness

Worst long term result - Derrick Johnson's injury. Just a heartbreaker. You could see the wind knocked out of the Chiefs' sails after the legend, just 15 tackles away from becoming the franchise's all time leading tackler, went down. No heart. No passion. And the score was only 7-3 at that point. I believe we'll see DJ in a Chiefs uniform again, but at his age, with this injury, you'd have to think his best football is behind him. Damn, damn, damn shame.

Worst game as Chiefs head coach - Andy Reid. What an indefensible performance from the source of my biggest reason for optimism heading into 2014. Lets run through this from best (that means the least terrible, in this case) to worst:

"Bestest" - Travis Kelce played 18 snaps. Yes, the offense's biggest receiving threat (with Dwayne Bowe out) played less than one third of the team's snaps. Meanwhile, Hammond (54), Fasano (52), Hemingway (33). Why? WHY???

"Best" - I'm pretty sure nobody else will complain about this, but I LOATHED it. Punting the ball, down two scores, with four minutes left in the game. 4th and 15? Don't care. Own 15 yard line? Don't care. The objective is to win the game. You take the chance there. You risk a slightly worse loss for any chance at a win. And yet, coaches do this all the time to make the final score look prettier. Lipstick on Andy.

Worst - The deep pass from their own two yard line, with 38 seconds left in the half. The beginning of the end. You can't give away free points in a game with two low octane offenses. I'll rarely complain about aggressive strategy, but there was so much more to lose than gain at that juncture. Total head scratcher.

Worstest - Not enough Jamaal. It's never enough Jamaal. Andy Reid's number one flaw as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. In fairness, we knew this about him coming in.

"Best Day EVER!!!" - Ryan Succop's status update on Facebook, immediately following the game.

Worst position to put Alex Smith in - Down two scores. First off, say this aloud with me: Yesterday was not about Alex Smith. It wasn't. He was actually having a pretty good day up until the INT just before halftime. After that, it felt like everything was forced, which is most definitely not his game.

So I did a little research last night, here's what I found: Alex Smith has come back from two scores down to win a game only twice since 2006 (vs Detroit and Philadelphia, both in 2011). For perspective, Andrew Luck did it three times last season. As did Russell Wilson. Hell, Matt Schaub has done it three times over the last two seasons (I'd offer more examples, but research for this was time consuming, I couldn't find any comprehensive data on it).

Alex Smith is a quarterback that needs to play with the lead, like he did for most of last season. Is that a problem for a guy you just dished out $68 million to? You're damn right it is. I don't want to be stuck paying a QB big money if I feel like the game is over at 17-3. And yesterday, it felt like it was over.

Best use of a single snap - Vance Walker: One snap, one sack. Play this man!

Worst positional group in the NFL - The Chiefs guards. One is a sixth round rookie. And the other was signed a day before the Chiefs' last preseason game, and was rated as the 74th best guard in the NFL by Pro Football Focus last season. His name is Mike McGlynn. And he was an abomination yesterday.

Best use of the Ugly Friend Effect - The Ugly Friend Effect is when a lady surrounds herself with less attractive women to make herself look like a 10. Well, the Chiefs have officially surrounded Eric Fisher with less attractive offensive lineman to make him look like a first overall pick. And It worked yesterday. We actually arrived at this conclusion towards the end of our Postgame Show last night (Every Sunday here on Arrowhead Pride, 30 minutes after the game), but it was good enough to rehash.

Best question to ask now - Is the season over? Well, if you would have asked me at any point yesterday, my answer would've been a resounding yes. But I calmed down and did a little research. I had remembered feeling this way after the season opener before. But what actually happened in those instances? Lets check it out:

2006 - Trent Green nearly gets decapitated in loss to Cincinnati. Team handed over to Damon Huard. Season over? Nope, Chiefs go 9-7 and make the playoffs.

2011 - 41-7 loss to Buffalo at home. Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki torn ACL's (hmm, sounds familiar). Season over? Not quite. Chiefs go 7-9, missing out on a (very weak) division title by two blocked field goals from Richard Seymour.

In other words, a single game does not a season make. And if your team is really bad, you probably won't know until closer to midseason, like with the 2012 Chiefs. In related news, I have way too much experience in judging disastrous football teams. As a side note, kill me.

And stop chit-chatting it up with Dexter!

A non-comprehensive list of the things that went wrong in the Kansas City Chiefs 26-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

KC Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media on Monday following the Chiefs Sunday loss to the Tennessee Titans, 26-10. Here's what Reid said on what went wrong with the Chiefs in all phases.

Offense

1-of-12 on third downs. That's obviously not good enough. Andy Reid and everyone else knows this. If you're bad on third downs, you're probably a bad offense. The Chiefs were a had offense on Sunday.

11 touches for Jamaal. "Not giving 25 the ball more than seven times was negligence on my part," Reid said. Charles had seven rushes and four receptions on the day. We already talked about this. Here's what Reid said: "They primarily went with a cover 3 look or a cover 4 with a cheat safety look," Reid said. "Both are good run stopping coverages. They played gaps and started shooting the gaps. It wasn't anything that should have deterred us off the run game as much as it did." But it did.

Defense

Chiefs played well in the first half. I went into the second half thinking this will be a tight game because while the Chiefs offense can't score, their defense would come up with a play.

Not so well in the second half. The Titans ran it quite a bit in the second half. That's what jumped out to Andy Reid. Hmm, why would the Titans run the ball so much in the second half? I am guessing because Derrick Johnson and Mike DeVito were out.

Special teams

No excuses for Cairo Santos missed 48-yard field goal. "Everybody has trust he'll get that worked out," Reid said.

Bad execution on the fake punt. "The fake punt was the right thinking. We were short on one block there. The set up was what we wanted and had seen."

Few things in life were more pathetic than the Chiefs in their lifeless loss on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs did not lose 26-10 to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon in a disgusting display on Sunday. The Kansas City Chiefs lost 26-10 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Despite being without the services of Dwayne Bowe, Donald Stephenson, De'Anthony Thomas and Marcus Cooper, the Chiefs outclassed the Titans all over the field in terms of talent. In terms of guts, Kansas City came up empty. The Chiefs fell behind and showed no heart throughout the game, at one point showcased by Tamba Hali and Sean Smith sharing a chuckle with Dexter McCluster. On the next play, the Chiefs fell behind 20-3.

That moment encapsulates everything that went wrong with Kansas City. The talent is there, the heart is vacant. Hali is a 10-year veteran who was an active no-show against the Indianapolis Colts in January. He should be fuming that another season is about to go down the toilet after seeing Derrick Johnson and Mike DeVito get carted off with Achilles injuries in a contest you should be winning, yet are being blown out of. Instead, Hali is sharing a laugh with the opponent while fans are stuck watching the circus.

I understand the offense and defense will have issues. But the mentality that was displayed today needs to be removed from that locker room.

— Nick Jacobs (@Jacobs71) September 7, 2014

Then there is Andy Reid and Alex Smith. Reid's gameplan was the worst we have seen since he became the head coach in 2013.

"I didn't do a very good job there," Andy Reid said of the passing game. "Could have used our short intermediate game better, probably could have run it more. Not a very good job on my part."

Reid seems to have stolen his strategy from a 12-year-old kid playing Madden, a youngster who loves to chuck it deep with complete disdain for patience. His decision to throw a deep ball from the 2-yard line with under a minute remaining in the first half is just a bad decision.

Reid has Jamaal Charles, the best weapon in the NFL. Charles was healthy and yet touched the ball 11 times. Without Bowe, the Chiefs had absolutely no options on the outside. Donnie Avery could not earn separation while Frankie Hammond Jr. and the rest of the crew showed why most mocked Kansas City to pick a receiver in the first round.

Instead, the Chiefs punted on the present to pick for the future and took Dee Ford. Ford, who has considerable potential, recorded three snaps. Albert Wilson, a prospect we have heard so much about, also had no statistics. Why wasn't he given a chance with the second half unfolding like a horror show? One will never know.

Then there is Smith, our $75 million quarterback. Smith played atrociously even when the offensive line held up. He threw a trio of interceptions, all forced passes to Avery. It's easy to criticize Reid for calling the plays and Avery for not getting open, but Smith is a veteran. You have to look elsewhere or throw the ball away. Instead, he gave the Titans three gifts.

The most disturbing part of the day was seeing no anger on the field or after the game. It was a horrific loss and yet nobody seems embarrassed or furious. It was simply another day at the office. The loss was accepted before the score became final. The fate was determined with little resistance.

It was ugly, it was brutal and it was laughingstock-worthy. It was the Chiefs being the Chiefs.

Reviewing the Kansas City Chiefs snap counts against the Tennessee Titans.

The Tennessee Titans beat the Kansas City Chiefs 26-10 on Sunday and they did it by running 22 more offensive plays than the Chiefs did. The Titans ran 79 plays while the Chiefs ran just 57 plays. That's how you lose games.

Another way to lose games is to give one of your few offensive weapons just 18 snaps. Travis Kelce caught 3 balls for 49 yards on just 18 snaps. Compare that to 52 snaps for Anthony Fasano. He is obviously a weapon and the Chiefs were missing Dwayne Bowe, There was no better time to use Kelce more.

The leading receivers were Donnie Avery and Frankie Hammond, who played 55 and 54 snaps respectively. Junior Hemingway as the third receiver with 33 snaps. This changes next week when Dwayne Bowe is thrown back into the mix.

New Chief Mike McGlynn started at guard while Jeff Allen started at right tackle. Allen, however, came out midway through the game with an injury. He was replaced at right tackle by Ryan Harris. Remember, Allen was the starting left guard for the last two seasons but the Chiefs switched him to right tackle with Donald Stephenson's suspension.

Jamaal Charles had a lot of snaps (54) but just 11 touches. Ugh.

Defensively, the Chiefs played a ton of snaps and Dontari Poe missed just one of them. One odd part of this is that Vance Walker, who signed a multi-year contract in the offeseason, played just one snap. We all thought Walker would come in as a potential starter. Instead he feels like he is barely part of the defense. Is this a scheme thing or performance-related?

Derrick Johnson played 30 snaps before rupturing his Achilles; Mike DeVito played 26 snaps before rupturing his. DJ was a full-time player and replaced by James Michael-Johnson. DeVito came out on passing downs and was replaced by Jaye Howard.

In the subpackages, nickelback (not the band) Chris Owens played 50 snaps. Daniel Sorsensen showed he is the third safety with 18 snaps.

Rookie Dee Ford played three snaps while rookie Phillip Gaines played just one snap.

NBC's Rodney Harrison thinks so.

I was at the Kansas City Chiefs 26-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans which means I didn't get to see any other highlights today. So I flipped on NBC to watch Football Night in America and came across this exchange between NBC's Dan Patrick, Rodney Harrison and Tony Dungy.

Harrison: Kansas City, they're done. Their very first game.

Patrick: Done?

Harrison: Yes and I'm not exaggerating. You get your best player on defense, Derrick Johnson, he's out for the year. You play San Diego twice. Why are you looking at me like that?

Patrick: We just had one game!

Dungy: It's early to be done.

Harrison: You have to listen to what I'm saying. You have to play against Denver twice, San Diego twice. You had the entire season to prepare for the Tennessee Titans and you have to play outside the division, the NFC West. Stop looking away Dan. Are you convinced now?

So we put this to a poll. How many of you feel the Chiefs are done after Week 1?
