The Chiefs LB has made his return ... but he's not on the roster yet.

The Kansas City Chiefs lost starting inside linebacker Joe Mays to a wrist injury before the season but he is on his way to a return. Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mays, who was placed on short term IR before the season, is getting back to practice this week.

"Joe is going to practice [Wednesday]," Reid said. "Limited role, we are just going to get him back in the swing of things. Again, we look forward to doing that. Start getting himself back into football shape there."

The short term IR rules state that once he comes back, the Chiefs have three weeks to decide what to do with him. They can activate him to the roster or they can place him on season-ending IR.

"So our doctors told us it was time to start getting him back doing football things," Reid said. "But we are just going to take it nice and slow with him."

If you had told me before the season that the Chiefs would lose both starting inside linebackers -- Mays and Derrick Johnson -- and their defense would be ranked No. 3 overall, I would've said you were lying. So the Chiefs are doing a nice job replacing those two with James-Michael Johnson and Josh Mauga. Adding Mays back to the roster at some point will only make the Chiefs stronger.

Not great news for Chiefs LB Joe Mays, who had wrist surgery.

Kansas City Chiefs starting inside linebacker Joe Mays had surgery on his wrist following an injury in the Chiefs Week 2 preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. According to Andy Reid, this injury will keep Mays out for a while.

"I don't think it's a short period of time here fellas," Reid said on a Sunday conference call with reporters. "I don't know exactly how long it's going to be. He tore one of the tendons in there in his wrist so he had surgery to repair that. So that could be a while. I would put it in the same category or even a little longer as a broken bone. We've just got to see how that works out."

(Update: The Chiefs clarified it's a ligament injury in his wrist)

If Mays is going to be out for a long time, you have to wonder about the short term IR designation. The Chiefs can apply that on September 2.

Mays was a free agent signing who has regularly lined up with the first team this offseason. He plays the thumper role in the middle on the (ever decreasing) base defense. Josh Mauga and Nico Johnson are among the candidates to replace him during this time.

KC Chiefs LB Joe Mays is having wrist surgery. It's not known how much time he'll miss.

While the Kansas City Chiefs recently got good news with Jamaal Charles returning to practice (albeit with the scout team), there is some not so good news regarding linebacker Joe Mays and his injured wrist. Adam Caplan reports that Mays' wrist injury will require surgery.

I can confirm the report as well. Mays hasn't practiced all week. It's not clear how long it will keep him out, which is obviously what everyone wants to know. It's fair to wonder about the start of the season since that's just a few weeks away on September 7. A quick Google search shows a range of players who played briefly through broken wrists to those who missed a month or more. So we'll just have to see what the Chiefs say.

Behind Mays is linebacker Josh Mauga, who was just signed the first week of training camp, and 2013 fourth round pick Nico Johnson. Mauga, who has recently dealt with injuries himself, appears to have the edge in that battle running with the second team over Johnson. You have to wonder if this injury gets Nico Johnson onto the roster as well.

This isn't ideal for the Chiefs defense. Mays was brought in this offseason on a 2-year contract and immediately stepped in as the starting inside linebacker next to Derrick Johnson. This will be a step backwards at that position for the Chiefs ... if Mays ends up missing any meaningful time, which we still don't know.
