The GM of the Chiefs offered a brief statement after signing Jamaal Charles to a four-year, $28 million contract.

It's officially official. Jamaal Charles is signed, sealed and delivered after physically signing his contact in St. Joe on Wednesday evening. I didn't expect a long holdout ... but I expected something more than the 45-minute or so holdout that we saw from the Kansas City Chiefs running back.

After Jamaal inked his deal, Chiefs GM John Dorsey said he was E-L-I-T-E (he didn't spell it like that, but whatever).

"Jamaal is an elite player in the National Football League," Dorsey said in a statement. "It was important for us to keep him here in Kansas City long-term."

It was important for everyone interested in seeing the Chiefs win this year.

Here's an interesting tidbit I noticed on this week. On Tuesday, the day this holdout talk first came out, Dorsey was on his phone while on the field at Chiefs practice. He was standing behind a tent quite often on his phone. He's usually not talking on his phone as much as he was that day. Then at this morning's practice, Dorsey was nowhere to be seen. So I guess if Dorsey isn't at practice, a major extension is coming? I'll remember that for future speculation.

Running down the numbers on Jamaal Charles' new contract with the Chiefs.

Upon the news that the Kansas City Chiefs had inked Jamaal Charles to a new two-year deal, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Jamaal would be the second highest paid running back in the NFL. That is true ... kinda.

2nd highest paid in 2014

For the 2014 season, Charles is indeed the second highest paid running back. He went from $3.9 million in 2014 cash on his previous deal to $8.3 million on the new deal. That $8.3 million is slightly ahead of Jonathan Stewart's $8.285 million due in 2014, making him the second highest paid running back in 2014. Adrian Peterson's $12 million per year so obviously an outlier.

7th highest average per year

For the life of the contract, the contract ties Jamaal with Ray Rice for the seventh highest average per year for running backs. His $28 million over four years averages out to $7 million per year. Jonathan Stewart, Marshawn Lynch, Matt Forte, Arian Foster, LeSean McCoy and Adrian Peterson all have higher annual averages than Jamaal.

Some of these other contracts were signed in the last few years and each year the running back market declines. It's becoming less and less of a position where players are paid premium dollars. Considering this is how Jamaal previously stacked up to other backs, I consider this a win for both sides.

Jamaal Charles is the best.

So Jamaal Charles got a fancy new contract on Wednesday that will pay him $28 million over four years. This comes after a tumultuous 24 hours in which it was being reported that he would skip training camp in his quest for a new deal.

Jamaal took to Twitter for pretty much the best response ever:

I had no intention on holding out...I just ran out of gas on the way to camp and my cell phone battery died. It was a long walk I tell ya.

HAAAA!!!

Do you approve of the 4-year, $28 million deal Jamaal Charles received from the Kansas City Chiefs?

The Kansas City Chiefs and Jamaal Charles have come to an agreement on a new contract.

The new deal will pay Charles $28 million over four years for an average of $7 million per year. That's ranks him in the middle of the top 10 for annual average pay for running backs. The new deal will reportedly pay him $8.3 million in 2014, which is the second highest rate for a running back this season.

Charles had two years left on his previous deal at just under $10 million. That was signed back in 2010.

Everyone with a pulse is excited that Jamaal is on his way to St. Joe to Chiefs training camp. There's little question about that considering he's the Chiefs most important player. But does everyone approve of the new contract he received? Not many players get new contracts with two years remaining on their previous one.

There may still be some details to come out but let's put this to an approval poll.

All is well again as Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs strike an agreement on a new deal. It's a two-year extension, making his full contract worth $28 million over four years.

That didn't last long. Jamaal Charles and the Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement on a new contract, according to NFL Network.

Let me be the first say ... WHEW!

Before you read the rest of this, go read Jamaal's response to his new deal. So awesome.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports it's a two-year extension.

And Fox Sports Mike Garafolo says it's $18 million in new money.

Charles had two years remaining on his previous deal, which was signed in 2010. He was set to make just under $10 million over the next two seasons. Unless I'm missing something, that makes the total value about $28 million over four years, which is $7 million per year. Eagles RB LeSean McCoy has the second highest annual average for a running back at $9 million per year, behind Adrian Peterson at over $12 million per year.

Obviously, we'll need some more clarity on the numbers to see how they affect the cap. The Chiefs had $9.4 million in cap space before this deal.

Jamaal Charles made as much as any RB not named Adrian Peterson over the last 5 years. Now will make $8.3M this year instead of $3.9M

Comparing his previous deal to other top paid running backs and it was clear Jamaal was seriously underpaid. Jamaal's $8.3 million in 2014 would make him the second highest paid running back this season.

Word came down on Tuesday night that Jamaal Charles was going to hold out from training camp barring a new deal. The Chiefs veterans reported for training camp on Wednesday and I did not see Jamaal while I was out there, which made it appear he was a holdout. Luckily for the Chiefs, his holdout is ending very soon.

The Chiefs first training camp practice is on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). You can bet I'll be looking for Jamaal out there.

All is well again.
