Highlighting a few of the important contributions from the Kansas City Chiefs defense on Sunday as they beat the Buffalo Bills.

Each week we are picking the Teammates Of The Week and this week was a little difficult to do.

It can't be anyone on the offensive side of the ball given how much they struggled. Eric Fisher had what I thought was arguably his best game as a pro but picking an offensive lineman for an award is soooo boring, so we pass on him.

Special teams is a consideration with Ryan Succop kicking field goals and Dustin Colquitt pinning the Bills deeeeep in their own territory, especially late in the game.

Defensively is a little difficult to pick too because the Chiefs weren't perfect on that side of the ball (despite, you know, scoring two touchdowns). But I have to roll with the defense.

So, being unable to pick just one "star", I have three players for my Teammates Of The Week, and they're all on defense.

First up is Sean Smith, who made the biggest play at a time when the Chiefs needed a play the most. Check out this win probability graph from Pro Football Reference:

That spike is from Smith's interception return for a touchdown. The Chiefs were facing what would have been their largest deficit of the season. But, like clockwork, the Chiefs defense came up with a massive play when it was needed the most.

Second would be Dontari Poe. We're so spoiled by him. Nose tackles of his size simply don't platy every snap in the game as Poe did on Sunday in Buffalo. That just doesn't happen. He's a freak of nature. The best part is that he still had a terrific game, notching his highest grade against the run, according to Pro Football Focus.

Third, the rookie. Marcus Cooper. For real though, are we starting the Defensive Rookie of the Year discussion?

Reactions to your 9-0 Kansas City Chiefs beating the Buffalo Bills, 23-13, on Sunday afternoon at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

C-L-U-T-C-H

I wrote a few weeks ago (knowing that stat folks would hate it) that the Chiefs are simply clutch. You can't quantify that except to say that when the Chiefs need a play the most, someone is making a play.

On Sunday in Buffalo that someone was Sean Smith.

Is it too much to say that Smith's 100-yard interception return was the biggest play of this season? Someone earlier suggested Dexter McCluster's punt return touchdown as the biggest play but I have to say it's this one. Down 10-3, the Chiefs were facing what would've been their biggest deficit of the season if the Bills had scored. They needed a play more than they needed a play at any point this season.

Clutch? I don't know what else to call it.

And poof ... magic appears in the form of Jeff Tuel ignoring the open Stevie Johnson and throwing it straight to Smith.

What's also neat is that that was the third play of the Chiefs goal line stand. They stuffed them on the first two downs, leading to third down. Also neat is that this play only happens if DJ gets flagged for pass interference three plays earlier as he did.

Call it what you want, but I'm calling it clutch.

Chiefs D makes big plays, gives up big plays

I think we knew this, right? We just expected it to happen a lot more than it has.

The Bills on Sunday survived on the big plays from their offense. Whether it 59 yards to Marquise Goodwin or 61 yards from CJ Spiller or any other of those 20-plus yard plays, the BIlls kept big play after big play coming.

At the start of the season, looking at Bob Sutton's scheme, we knew the big play was one of the side effects of playing that way. Sutton loves to bring pressure. That in turn puts pressure on his own corners to play man coverage. And when you play man coverage, you're vulnerable to the big play. There's a reason quarterbacks when they have no other play will throw it into one-on-one coverage hoping his guy can make a play. Because they often do.

I remembered this when Tony Romo kept throwing to Dez Bryant. I remembered it when Eli Manning went deep to Hakeem Nicks. And I kept remembering it on Sunday in Buffalo with something called a Jeff Tuel.

The Chiefs defense can give up big plays but that's offset by the big plays they create themselves. On Sunday those big plays were huge. Just huge. And worth every big play they gave up to Buffalo's offense.

Scoring offense includes the entire team, not just the offense

There is a particular Broncos fan troll who loves was talking to me about the Chiefs offense on Sunday morning. 'How many points does the offense put up?' he asked. 24 points a game, the NFL's 13th scoring offense. 'Yeah, but how many are from Alex Smith and the offense?' he kept asking. Does it really matter? The great part about the Chiefs is that they get points from their defense and special teams.

They say you can't count on defensive or special teams touchdowns from your team. But those plays still happen and the points still count. For the Chiefs, the count is up seven non-offensive touchdowns this season: Four pick-sixes, Dexter McCluster's punt return touchdown, Marcus Cooper's special teams fumble touchdown and on Sunday Tamba Hali's fumble return touchdown.

Seven in nine games. Seems like a thing. A very, very good thing.

Chiefs own the fourth quarter

On a more tangible note, the Chiefs are dominating the fourth quarter this season.

Get this: The Chiefs are beating opponents 70-17 in the fourth quarter through the first nine games.

That's an average of basically 8-2 in the fourth quarter.

I covered most of this in the C-L-U-T-C-H section but that is an awesome stat.

The longest two weeks ever

Yeah, the offense struggled. Sure, the defense gave up some big plays. And, yeah, there were some questionable coaching decisions.

But none of that matters because of what's next: The longest two weeks of the year.

The countdown to Denver.

The countdown to Denver.

Kansas City and Denver will meet on Sunday Night Football November 17 at 7:30 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). Not only is that a loooong wait to that game, but it's also two more weeks of being the NFL's best team with the best record.

Enjoy these two weeks. This type of thing doesn't happen very often. The city is obsessed with this team. All is well right now. Have some fun with it.

Andy Reid said Happy Birthday to Tamba Hali in the post-game locker room as the Chiefs celebrated yet another win.

These post-game locker rooms videos from the Kansas City Chiefs are starting to be the best thing ever. There wasn't an Andy Reid GIF-able moment in there like there has been in the past but this one was pretty entertaining.

Andy Reid walked into the locker room and said, "Congratulations, baby. And how about those Chiefs?

Everyone cheers.

"It's a special day but it' s a really special day for No. 91, it's his birthday," Reid said.

"Hey man, we have the greatest coach in the game," Tamba Hali said, walking up to the center of the room.

Everyone cheers again.

"That's all you need to say!" Reid said.

That's a 9-0 locker room.

KC Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media after the Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills, 23-13. on Sunday in Buffalo. Read on for a few quotes from Reid.

Andy Reid was a happy man on Sunday after the Chiefs beat the Bills. Following the game he spoke with reporters, which you can see right here.

A few highlights of what he had to say.....

"We rallied in the fourth quarter and did some things that were better than what we did earlier." The Chiefs always look their best in the fourth quarter.

"The two [defensive] touchdowns were very important. It was a great interception for a long haul there and we did a nice job there. Then we had the fumble recovery, which was great." People are looking at the Chiefs two defensive touchdowns as if they're a negative on the offense. I look at it as a great thing. Good teams find ways to win and make people find new ways to explain their success.

"Dustin [Colquitt], that last punt that he had, to put it down at the 2 or 1-yard line, was phenomenal. [Ron] Parker did a great job of downing it right there." Huge. Parker deserves a lot of props because he got under the ball and batted it into play.

"The 4-minute drive at the end was big." Like it always is. Another patented fourth quarter drive by the Chiefs. This also put three points on the board, putting the Chiefs up by 10 points late in the game, essentially sealing it.

"We were out-gained by a ton but turnovers and the score, the important things, I mentioned this before -- points scored and turnovers, either created or lost -- really that's what the game came down to." Such a true statement.

"At that point, we needed that score." Sean Smith's touchdown. That was THE play of the game.

And a couple of quotes from Alex Smith:

"Unusual game, to say the last." Very unusual.

"I'm thrilled our defense got two scores, especially down on the goal line stand when we had to." The Chiefs have seven non-offensive touchdowns in nine games -- four pick-sixes, Dexter McCluster's punt return TD, Marcus Cooper's special teams fumble TD and Tamba Hali's fumble return TD.

The Kansas City Chiefs overcame a miserable first half and held on to beat the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium, 23-13. The Chiefs moved to 9-0 on the season, tying the 2003 Chiefs as the best start in franchise history. The game was highlighted by two defensive scores from the Chiefs -- Sean Smith's 100-yard interception return TD and Tamba Hali's fumble return TD (on his birthday). The Chiefs offense struggled but put together their best drive late in the fourth quarter as they've been known to do. Read on for a recap of the Chiefs 23-13 victory. Make sure you listen to the Amateur Hour post-game podcast at 4 p.m. Arrowhead time.
