The former third round pick has missed the entire 2013 season with a shoulder fracture.

The Kansas City Chiefs have reached an injury settlement with tight end Tony Moeaki, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post. The move means Moeaki, the former third round choice, subject to waivers.

Report: Steelers like Moeaki

Pittsburgh is reportedly checking in on Moeaki's health.

Moeaki fractured his shoulder during a preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was the first of several hits to the Chiefs tight end depth, a position once regarded among the deepest on the team.

The shoulder fracture immediately placed concerns on Moeaki's long-term future with the Chiefs. The former Iowa Hawkeye is in the final year of his rookie deal, and with the recent selection of Travis Kelce in this year's NFL Draft and the signing of Anthony Fasano to a four-year deal, it was presumed this might be the final season for Moeaki in Kansas City. Now that has become the reality.

Moeaki can now be claimed by any other team in the NFL through the waiver process. When healthy, he is a solid all-around tight end who is a capable blocker and a definite weapon in the passing game. Unfortunately staying healthy has been Moeaki's primary issue.

If Moeaki can come back healthy from the shoulder fracture for a new team, it begs the question why the Chiefs did not find a way to get him on the field at Arrowhead. After all, a pass-catching tight end would look nice for an offense that could use a playmaker. The good news for the Chiefs is that Fasano had a nice first week back with the Chiefs against the Texans.

Moeaki finished his Chiefs career with 80 catches for 1,009 yards and four touchdowns in 29 career starts.

Tony Moeaki, who is out without a fractured shoulder, tweeted his goodbye to the Kansas City Chiefs, who have released him as part of their roster cuts on Saturday. With the release of Marcus Dixon, the Chiefs roster is now down to 73 players.

The Tony Moeaki era is over.

A third round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Moeaki fractured his shoulder last week. That is a long-term injury so he and the Chiefs have parted ways. It's not clear the terms of the release. It's possible he was waived / injured which means if he clears waivers he would be revert to the Chiefs IR list. The problem with claiming Moeaki is that he's in the final year of his deal and expected to miss an extended amount of time with his injury.

The Moeaki era has been up and down over the last three-plus years. When healthy Moeaki has proven he can be a good contributor to the offense. Unfortunately, injuries have slowed down his progress considerably. In 2011 he missed the entire season with a torn ACL.

This puts the Chiefs in a tough spot at tight end. Anthony Fasano is the starter and Travis Kelce, who has been hurt recently, is behind him. Do they keep just two tight ends, and roll the dice on Kelce staying healthy? Or do they keep Demetrius Harris or Kevin Brock?

KC Chiefs TE Tony Moeaki is expected to be out 12 weeks. Let's revisit the Chiefs options.

We talked last night about the Kansas City Chiefs options with Tony Moeaki, who fractured his shoulder in Saturday's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Today we learn some more information.

Moeaki's injury is expected to be roughly 12 weeks, according to a source. He will not need surgery. I wasn't at Arrowhead today but 610 Sports' Bob Fescoe reports that Andy Reid said it was "possible" Moeaki goes on injured reserve, which would end his season. That IR is even an option confirms that this is a longer recovery timetable.

The options we laid out earlier -- IR, IR-designated to return, injury settlement -- would all seem to be on the table. As far as I know, the Chiefs have not decided what they will do. The IR-designated to return decision can not be made until September 3.

To me, the choice should be designated to return. You're basically making this bet: Will a player more important than Moeaki suffer an injury that is a IR-designated to return candidate?

What should the Chiefs do with Moeaki?

The KC Chiefs are now down to 75 players. What does it mean that Tony Moeaki and his injured shoulder are still on the roster through the first round of cuts?

The Kansas City Chiefs first round of cuts is in and TE Tony Moeaki remains on the roster. The Chiefs cut WR Jamar Newsome on Tuesday morning, the 15th cut in the last two days. The Chiefs are now at 75 players on the roster, which they had to be at by Tuesday's 3 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) deadline.

So what does it mean that Moeaki is on the roster?

Nothing, definitively. We still don't know the status of his injury.

Today's roster cuts just mean Moeaki remains on the roster, but there's one giant hurdle to come: The cut down to 53 players, the deadline for which is on Saturday, August 31, at 5 p.m. (Arrowhead Time).

Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Moeaki fractured his shoulder. Let's take a look at the Chiefs options with him right now.

First things first. We don't know any details about Tony Moeaki's shoulder injury other than that it's a shoulder fracture. We can speculate on how long he's out but we don't really know. There are a whole bunch of joints, bones and other things going on in the shoulder and ... well, I just don't know how long this injury will keep him out.

The injury could be short-term or long-term. Let's take a look at the Chiefs options right now, ranging from what we hope happens to what we hope doesn't happen.

They could do nothing and wait for him to return

Initial reactions to Moeaki's shoulder injury

The best case scenario.

We hope this is what happens because that would mean this injury isn't that long-term. We have no idea how long his injury will keep him out but let's say it's just a few weeks. This could be something they consider.

However, if they did this, it means Moeaki would remain on the active roster and count towards the Chiefs 53-man roster limit. That's the downside -- the Chiefs would be using a roster spot on a player who can not play for a certain amount of time.

They could place him on IR but designated for return

The new rule. Teams can place one player on IR and designated him for return, which means he could return later in the season.

A few things about this:

Reid: Hopefully this is his last injury

The player's injury has to be "major". In this case that means they can't practice for at least six weeks. I'm sure there are varying interpretations of major.

The Chiefs can't make this roster move until September 3. So they would carry Moeaki on the roster through cut downs. Final cut downs are on August 31.

The Chiefs would have to label Moeaki as designated for return at the time of placing him on IR. So they can't place him on IR and then decide a few weeks later they want to make it designated for return. It has to be done up front.

Six weeks after being placed on the list, Moeaki could return to practice.

Eight weeks after being placed on the list, Moeaki could return to the active roster and play again.

You can only use it on one player. So it would be Moeaki and no one else.

They could place him on IR

Regular 'ol injured reserve. This would immediately end his season with no chance of coming back. This would be the option if Moeaki's shoulder fracture keeps him out for multiple months.

This is the least-desirable option for Chiefs fans.

They could negotiate an injury settlement

Teams can't cut injured players. So they negotiate injury settlements in the cases of releasing an injured player.

I don't know much about how this works but it's basically what you think it is. A team will try to negotiate a price to end the relationship with the injured player, for whatever reason. It's a parting of ways.

PUP list is not an option

That's the Physically Unable to Perform list.

A player on the regular season PUP list has to be on the PUP list from the start of camp. So once you participate in camp, even one snap, all PUP options are off the table.

The advantage of the PUP list is that you gain a roster spot once you put a player on it. The PUP list means you would be out for at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

Tony Moeaki went down with a shoulder fracture in Saturday's OT victory over the Steelers. The timetable for a return is unknown but Andy Reid commented on the injury briefly.

Not a good week for the KC Chiefs tight ends. First Travis Kelce misses Saturday's game with a knee bruise. And then Tony Moeaki goes down with a shoulder injury. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed to reporters earlier on Monday that it was a shoulder fracture.

This particular injury raised some eyebrows given Moeaki's injury history.

"Well, he has had a couple of injuries," Reid said, via comments from the Chiefs, "but in a lot of cases with different players, sometimes you can change that around in your career. Hopefully this is his last one, and he'll be able to keep going."

Will he get a chance to turn it around? That's what I wonder with cut down day coming up. If the injury is severe enough the Chiefs could choose to place him on IR. Or they could "place the designate him for return" IR tag on him, allowing him to come back late in the season. We shall see.

I didn't even see when it happened. The TV broadcast didn't mention it (as far as I know). The radio broadcast apparently did, according to listeners.

"I'd have to go back and check exactly when it was," Reid said of the injury. "He got tackled and landed on it. He was actually tackled on that spot and landed on it."

Bad news one again for Tony Moeaki, who has a shoulder fracture. It's not clear how long he will be out. More reading: Chiefs 53-man roster prediction | Chiefs roster cuts | Chiefs depth chart

Oh man, Tony Moeaki.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end injured his shoulder in Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Andy Reid tells the media on Monday that it is a shoulder fracture.

Not any details beyond that. It's unclear exactly when this injury happened in the game. The Chiefs radio broadcast team mentioned the injury but the TV broadcast did not.

It's also not clear how this will affect him. Will he miss time? Will he make the roster? We'll have to wait and see on that, but it's concerning given Moeaki's injury history. He missed all of the 2011 season with an ACL tear and also had injury issues in college. He was out the entire offseason leading up to training camp after a knee procedure in the spring.

Here is a site with some information on shoulder fractures. Earlier this summer it was revealed that running back Michael Bush played most of the season with a fractured bone in his shoulder.

Moeaki has been the Chiefs third string throughout the preseason, sitting behind Anthony Fasano (1) and Travis Kelce (2) on the Chiefs depth chart. With Kelce recovering from a knee bruise, and Moeaki's shoulder injury, the Chiefs once deep group of tight ends don't look so deep anymore.

After Moeaki, the Chiefs tight end depth chart includes Kevin Brock and Demetrius Harris (the basketball player).

The Chiefs are currently at 76 players on the roster. They need to be down to 75 players by Tuesday afternoon. Placing someone on IR would be one way to clear a roster spot -- but we don't know if this is an IR situation or not for Moeaki. The Chiefs will then cut their roster down to 53 players by Saturday, August 31.

More updates on Moeaki when we have them.
