When there's a player-for-player swap for two players that were on the roster bubble to begin with, does anyone really win?

As you all know the KC Chiefs traded cornerback Javier Arenas to the Arizona Cardinals for fullback Anthony Sherman and at first glance the deal -- a fullback for a cornerback -- seems to favor the Cards. The thinking is that Arenas, a regular contributor for the Chiefs, will have a bigger impact in Arizona than Sherman will have in Kansas City. I haven't seen enough of Andy Reid's offense, and how he uses fullbacks, to have a strong opinion on this yet. As many of you know I didn't think Arenas was a lock to make the roster given the Chiefs free agent additions.

Still, most Chiefs fans are against this move. That was evident in Wednesday's Arenas trade approval poll:

My reaction is the same as a lot of Cardinals fans: If you were (probably) going to cut the guy, why not trade him for someone who might make the roster? That's the way Cards fans are reacting to losing Sherman. And that's the way I'm reacting to losing Arenas.

I took a peep over at Revenge Of The Birds, SB Nation's Cardinals blog, and most fans are sad to see Sherman go, which is a good sign for the Chiefs. See what other Cards fans at ROTB were saying about the trade:

bigredhalfCentury: I love Sherman, though. I wrote many weeks ago that in his own way, he was probably the best offensive back on the Cardinal team last season.

RedC: Sherman's awesome. One of my favorite Cardinals. He's a beast on special teams and blocks pretty well both in the run and pass game. Don't think I've ever seen him drop a pass, though they didn't throw to him too often. Moves well in space for a fullback but he's not a hybrid/receiving type. Going to miss him. Our lack of a run-game was all on the backs and offensive line. I'm pretty upset all we got was an average slot corner who won't crack our punt return lineup.

Cmncinaz: Reid is usually the one doing the hosing but I think folks are wise to his tricks now. Looks like the draft and Brandon Albert thing has backfired on him some too.

Jesse Reynolds: I could see how you're down on a FB. But the guy was a captain and an ace special teams player. Also his impact in the run game isn't a true measurement of his ability because the Cards had two rookie tackles, a backup center, both starting RBs and the starting QB out. Hard to run block against a stacked box with backups in front of you.

Azusa-PacifiCardinal: You guys are lucky to have the Shermanator. Like RedC said, our run/pass issues were on the OLine, not Sherman. He was a beast as a blocker and on special teams and is a great, hard-working, up-tempo player. I'm going to miss him. I feel like KC got the better end of the deal because Sherman will definitely make their team, whereas we have a logjam at CB. Peterson and Methieu aren't going anywhere and Arenas has to beat out some combination of Powers, Cason, Flemming, Bethel, and McCann (I have no idea how many CBs we'll keep on the roster) just to make the team. Be good to Sherman. May he level many linebackers for you!

Sherman has to be one if the top FBs in the league.

Scuba_Steve: Sherman has to be one if the top FBs in the league. Chiefs got an awesome player that can take lead FB position

proslaws: Meh. I guess it makes sense, on some level. I think we'd largely addressed our CB needs already, but the handwriting was kind of on the wall for Sherman. I actually loved his ferocity and work-ethic at that position, but the position just wasn't going to see much utility in the Arians/Moore offensive system.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded Javier Arenas to the Arizona Cardinals. Was it the right move?

What does the Javier Arenas trade tell me? It tells me that Arenas probably wasn't going to make the team anyway. When you're traded for a fullback (and your contract is still manageable), that says a lot about your value. Arenas wasn't a good bet to make the 53-man roster after the Chiefs free agency moves and this trade cements that.

But was it the right move? Is having Anthony Sherman on your roster better than Arenas? Is that a bigger impact? And what happens with sixth round pick Braden Wilson now?

Only time will tell but we will do what all good football fans do and quickly judge whether this was a good move or not.

Please vote in the poll and let us know: Do you approve of the trade?

The Kansas City Chiefs traded for Arizona Cardinals fullback Anthony Sherman on Wednesday. The Chiefs later announced that cornerback Javier Arenas was part of the deal.

Javier Arenas is on his way to Arizona. The Kansas City Chiefs have formally announced the trade involving Arizona Cardinals fullback Anthony Sherman and Chiefs cornerback Javier Arenas. Arenas is headed to Arizona to play for Bruce Arians and the Cardinals while Sherman is coming to Kansas City to play under Andy Reid.

Arenas' agent tells NFL.com: "This is a trade where, based on Kansas City's acquisitions at the cornerback position, we were actively pursuing. With the trade made, we're happy it's to the Arizona Cardinals."

Arenas moving out of town shouldn't be a huge surprise. The Chiefs added Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson in free agency, and drafted Sanders Commings in the fifth round. That's a big investment into the secondary but even before that Arenas wasn't guaranteed of a roster spot.

Sherman was a fifth round pick in 2011. He played fullback at Connecticut (team captain!), appearing in 51 games. Sherman blocked for Beanie Wells' 1,000 yard season in 2011. Arians wasn't big on fullbacks so Sherman was expendable.

What makes this interesting is that the Chiefs just drafted Braden Wilson, a fullback out of Kansas State, in the sixth round. Are they going to compete with each other? Or will they have different roles? Also, why wasn't this trade done before the draft? Not that it matters ... I was just curious when the talks started.

Arenas was a 2010 second round pick. He was a good role player but wasn't outstanding in any one area.

The Chiefs have added a veteran player to the backfield.

The Kansas City Chiefs have added another player to the backfield with the announcement of a trade for Arizona Cardinals fullback Anthony Sherman. Adam Caplan reported the rumor, and the Star's Adam Teicher confirmed the news that brings an interesting emphasis on the fullback position in recent days.

Sherman is a 24-year-old fullback selected by the Cards in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He played in 29 games the last two years after playing collegiately at Central Connecticut State. He was a small school find for the Cardinals under former head coach Ken Whisenhunt, but the Cardinals have clearly moved on in their offensive philosophy.

Recently Bruce Arians, the team's new head coach, inferred that the Cardinals could do without Sherman's services given the lack of emphasis on the fullback position. This set up the possibility of a trade, and the Chiefs clearly saw an opportunity to grab a player who was a poor fit given the new scheme in Arizona.

Tyler Nickel from Revenge of the Birds notes Sherman's ability to provide help on special teams and the offense:

He was made a captain in that phase last year due to how hard he plays on kickoffs and punts. He is always a leading tackler and is unafraid to throw his body into the wreckage.

Sherman also has the ability to catch the ball coming out of the backfield. I could see Arians lining Sherman up as a tight end from time to time even if he isn't very tall. He still catches the ball well and can confuse defenses.

It's an interesting move for the Chiefs given their attention to fullback with the recent addition of sixth round choice Braden Wilson from Kansas State in the recent NFL Draft.
