Winston was cut by the Chiefs way back on March 6. I figured he would find a team quickly as free agency started the next week. But a deep pool of talent at offensive tackle has made the market a little more difficult for all free agent offensive tackles.

Someone asked me just this weekend when I thought Winston would sign and I predicted after the draft. At this point, it makes more sense to me to see a team wait out the draft and perhaps draft a tackle, rather than signing Winston now. But it may not work out that way.

The Cowboys aren't the same type of zone-blocking running game that you'd expect to find with Winston.

If Winston does end up in Dallas, it would be the third notable Chief to join the Cowboys after leaving KC in the last year. Brandon Carr and Kyle Orton both went to Dallas after leaving the Chiefs, although they were both true unrestricted free agents, not a cut like Winston.

The Kansas City Chiefs cut Eric Winston on Wednesday evening and on Thursday the now former Chiefs right tackle spoke with Danny Parkins on 610 Sports. Read on for what Winston said about his release and listen to the entire interview on 610Sports.com.

Eric Winston is no longer the Kansas City Chiefs right tackle and after hearing him speak with Danny Parkins on 610 Sports I'm still not exactly sure why that is. Winston called it a "philosophical" thing. It wasn't a health thing. It didn't seem to be based completely on his play. Or even his contract. "Philosophical."

Whatever it was, Winston said at this stage in his career you're always looking around to see what happens.

"I knew when they tagged BA (Branden Albert) that obviously that possibility was there," Winston said.

More: Who is affected by Winston's release? Everything we know about the move

That's an interesting statement. Not many people, at least that I saw, made the connection to Eric Winston when Albert was tagged. It was always Albert and Winston or the future of the left tackle. Winston's name wasn't thrown around really at all.

"They decided to go in that direction that they did," Winston continued. "You gotta respect that. I respect them. They could've waited for a while before releasing me but they're doing it now and hopefully land on my feet."

In explaining his release, Winston offered up his prediction on the Chiefs upcoming No. 1 pick.

"...they'll probably end up a taking a tackle."

"They didn't say this so don't quote me, I'm not putting words in their mouth but I'm just assuming with the way the draft is shaping up and then deciding they wanted to hold onto Branden Albert that it looks like they'll probably end up taking a tackle. And you're not going to pay three guys a bunch of money."

That's sure what it looks like right now. But, as this offseason has taught us, that's subject to change.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

"If the draft was different maybe my situation would be different," Winston said, "or if they decided to let Branden test the free agent market maybe it would've been different in that way. You can never tell with these kinds of things. I think it's more of a philosophical thing, going in a different direction. They probably wanted to get a little younger. I respect it. A lot of teams sometimes aren't up front about it. They were up front. I thought they did it the right way. I have no problems with them."

A few other tidbits from the interview:

-Do you have anything to say to the fans who are upset at you based on the Cassel comments? "Not at all. Listen, like I said before, they paid their money to come out and support us and I think that's great. I wouldn't have a job without them."

"I feel in a way if the old regime were still here I'd be here."

-One report said Winston had "serious" injury issues. That's news to Winston. He said he had an elbow scope after the season, which was minor, but he's already been cleared and is running and lifting. He said he's ready to go.

-On moving from left tackle to right tackle: "Some guys definitely have the ability and the dexterity to flip flop sides. I think the tackles are hard. Left tackle to right tackle, that's a tough proposition especially when you haven't done it in the past. I remember moving from left to right tackle in college and I mean that was a tough transition."

-"I feel in a way if the old regime were still here I'd be here."

-Winston didn't think him being vocal while in Kansas City contributed to his release.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released Eric Winston, which is a surprise. What does it mean for the Chiefs in free agency and the draft? Read on for more.

The release of Eric Winston is a confusing one because the Kansas City Chiefs can go in so many different directions to replace him. Do they use the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft on a right tackle? Move Branden Albert to right tackle (sorry, had to ask)? Poke around in free agency? And where does Donald Stephenson fit into all of this? Let's try to tackle all those questions with <strike>complete guessing</strike> completely accurate answers.

More: The Chiefs top 8 needs Dee Milliner at No. 1?

1. Drafting a RT at No. 1? Yes, it's possible

Yes, I think this is very possible. If I were to rank these, I'd put this as the No. 1 most-likely option right now. I need just a little bit longer to think this out before I fully state this as my case but see what you think of this theory: the Chiefs draft Luke Joeckel (or Lane Johnson or Eric Fisher, whoever it is), throw him on the right side for one year and (hopefully) work out a long-term deal with Albert. If you get a deal done with Albert then great, you have two good tackles. But even if Albert leaves via free agency you have protected yourself on the left side with Joeckel / Johnson / Fisher / whoever.

One key point to remember here is that Dorsey subscribes to the theory that you put your five best offensive linemen out on the field, regardless of tackle. Dorsey was asked by the KC Star at the NFL Combine if re-signing Albert and drafting Joeckel was an option. His answer:

"Then you have great competition at left tackle. Who's to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle? Maybe one plays left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. You put your best five offensive linemen out there. There are so many options out there right now. Anything is possible.''

"Who's to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle?" -Dorsey

Like the Chiefs No. 1 pick, Dorsey likes talking about the options this brings.

Yes, I know you're not supposed to take a right tackle No. 1 overall but whatever. Look at it as taking an offensive tackle, not a right or left tackle. The Rams played No. 2 pick Jason Smith on the right side. Michael Oher was a left tackle who played right tackle for a while in the NFL. Not everyone can do it but it happens where tackles play both sides, depending on the circumstances. In this scenario, a rookie drafted No. 1 overall would clearly mean so much more in Albert insurance, so the decision would be made with the long-term implications in mind.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

2. The Chiefs can still sign a starting RT in free agency

Important! This is a good year for offensive tackles hitting the market. Dorsey seemed (to me) to hint at the large number of offensive tackles available in free agency, which made me start wondering.

I don't really know who that person would be because ... well, I wasn't really looking at right tackles. Here's a list of the best available offensive linemen. The big name right tackle is Andre Smith from the Bengals. There are other, cheaper options (which is a good reminder that the Chiefs spent a lot of money on Monday).

3. Move Branden Albert to the right side?

Expect the move-Branden-Albert talk to get even heavier now. Dorsey said as recently as Tuesday night on Kevin Kietzman's show that Albert is the team's starting left tackle. Albert has consistently said he is the left tackle. I'm going to assume he's going to be the left tackle next year. Moving Albert from left to right would be a big thing and I think everyone knows that. I don't see it happening.

4. Does Donald Stephenson factor in anywhere?

This comment on AP:

Maybe. Maybe not. (How's that for analysis?)

I don't know the answer but Stephenson is a 2012 third round pick so it's absolutely worth asking. He played mostly on the left side last year backing up Albert in five games. Obviously, the wrong side. But he did play one game on the right side. It's not totally foreign. I don't know what the Chiefs current regime thinks of Stephenson as a future right tackle. Shoot, I don't know what the new Chiefs regime thinks of hardly any of these guys. Maybe he will be what we thought last year -- the swing tackle.

If the Chiefs don't sign anyone in free agency or draft a starter, Stephenson becomes a lot more interesting.

The Kansas City Chiefs cut Eric Winston, one of the big surprises of the offseason. Let us know in the poll below whether this was a good or bad move by the new Chiefs regime.

Cutting Eric Winston. I didn't see this coming. We knew surprises were coming with the new Kansas City Chiefs regime but I didn't think this would be the surprise. This changes a lot of things for the Chiefs, most notably free agency and the 2013 NFL Draft but we don't know how it changes things. You can't cut a big time right tackle and not expect to have major follow-up to that in the draft or free agency.

And we don't know why the release came about. Was it money related? Was there an injury we don't know about? Is there more to the story? Hopefully we hear from the Chiefs at some point about Winston's release because I don't know their reasoning behind the move. I'm not quite ready to completely bash the move until I understand what their thought process was. So, the Chiefs perspective on all of this will have to wait. Maybe this will all make sense after free agency and/or the draft.

I don't see how this makes the Chiefs a better team.

As for my perspective ... the bottom line is this: I don't see how this makes the Chiefs a better team. At least not right now. I do not think the Chiefs are going to find a better right tackle than Eric Winston in 2013 and not at the price the Chiefs were paying Winston which, in my limited knowledge of contracts and the salary cap, did not seem like a prohibitive contract. I just don't see how this makes the Chiefs a better team, how it makes them more talented and better prepared for 2013 and beyond.

All the Chiefs' actions up to this point tell us they don't see this as a rebuilding team. Then this move ... well, I don't know what this is.

Now for your perspective. Yay or nay on cutting Winston? Vote in the poll below.

The KC Chiefs cut Eric Winston, ending his one-year career in Kansas City. What he will likely be remembered for is his speech after he says some fans booed Matt Cassel after he was hurt.
While we're surprised that Eric Winston was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs, we should've known a move like this was coming. Any time a new regime takes over, there's turnover.

Are you surprised the Kansas City Chiefs cut Eric Winston? I am. I definitely am. While we knew change was possible, this isn't the type of change I was thinking of. Winston is considered a very good right tackle in the NFL and the Chiefs had him at a contract that we thought the Chiefs could reasonably afford. Apparently not.

Winston announced his release on Twitter.

For me, there's one big picture point to remember in this: we expected change. We knew it was coming. We just didn't know who. Any time a new GM and/or head coach comes on board, there is always change. We know that and talked about it.

The Eric Winston speech

"But when you cheer, when you cheer somebody getting knocked out, I don't care who it is, and it just so happened to be Matt Cassel -- it's sickening. It's 100 percent sickening. I've been in some rough times on some rough teams, I've never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than in that moment right there." More...

No, I didn't think it would be Winston, which is why I'm so shocked. But I expected a move like this, something that would throw me off guard. (Expecting the unexpected. Beat that!)

It's not the perfect comparison but I think of Bernard Pollard's release back in 2009. He was a former second round pick with three years of experience who made lots of highlight-reel hits. People didn't expect him to get cut. And, on the 2009 roster cut down day, there he was. Cut. This thanks to then new Pioli regime.

Winston's sort of the same way. The vast majority of conversations about the Chiefs in free agency, the draft and next season assumed that Winston would be the starting right tackle.

Remember how we were talking earlier this week about the Chiefs having so many options with the No. 1 pick, and no one knowing what they'll do? I think it's going to be a while before we know what they'll do.

Big important note: the Chiefs aren't done making roster moves. More could be coming before March 12, the start of the new league year. The story of the offseason has been about adding players, from Alex Smith to Dwayne Bowe to Dustin Colquitt to Branden Albert. Winston's release makes you wonder if we'll see more big moves. I suspect we'll a few (lookin' at you, Matt Cassel).

The Kansas City Chiefs have released right tackle Eric Winston, who was signed just last year to a four-year, $22 million contract. This move comes as a surprise. Branden Albert was franchise tagged on Monday and the Chiefs hold the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Surprise! The shockers keep coming as the Kansas City Chiefs have cut Eric Winston, according to Winston himself, who writes this on Twitter:

I just don't get it. PFT reports on some of the cap savings. I'm sure there's more to the story and the Chiefs front office deserves a shot at free agency before we freak out. But ... I'm gonna freak out a little anyway.

The Chiefs on Monday decided to franchise tag Branden Albert, which led many of us to believe they had their bookend tackles set up. Apparently not. The release of Winston very well could have implications on the 2013 NFL Draft, where the Chiefs have the No. 1 overall pick.

As a vested vet, Winston immediately becomes a free agent where he will have suitors. Free agency for everyone else opens on March 12.

A few Chiefs have reacted to the move...
