Ever wonder what a "spread game analyst" does? Me too. The Chiefs version of that, Brad Childress, spoke with the media this week and talked a little more about his role for the team.

I was in the KC Chiefs locker room a couple weeks ago after one of their wins (which one? Who knows, too many too count) and I saw Brad Childress walking by. I said to the media guy next to me, "I think it would be a cool feature story if someone did something on what Childress does because I still don't really know."

Well, it's not a feature story but it we have some more information on what exactly Childress is doing. The Chiefs "spread game analyst / special projects" coach spoke to the media this week. There is some stuff in here that I didn't really know.

On what he does as the "spread game analyst / special projects" coach:

Reid: The offense can get better

"I think, number one, trends around the league - what people are doing," Childress said, via quotes from the Chiefs. "I do some advance work. For instance, in our short week against Philadelphia, coach [Reid] said, ‘Why don't you get a jump on them?' Because we weren't going to have much time. We came right back in Monday and practiced with the guys. I could be looking at somebody who's underperforming, or over performing - if you will - why they're having their successes. John Dorsey may give me some quarterbacks to look at, which he did when I first came in here, some wide receivers to look at, grade. It's a little bit of everything, it's a hodgepodge."

That first one, trends around the league. It's cool to have a coach who wants to be ahead of the curve and on the cutting edge of what teams are doing. You have to put a lot of effort into doing something different in the NFL because everyone is copying off of everyone else.

When Childress was hired, Andy Reid indicated that he would also be helping out on the defensive side of the ball.

Alex: 'They don't give out any trophies after 9 weeks'

Childress said of his defensive role: "Bob Sutton will come in and say to me, ‘If you see anything good that somebody's doing...', like this last week [against Buffalo], because he coached with Mike Pettine at New York, if you see any good blitzes that are going to give you problems, let me know, send them to me. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, so I do some of that too."

Chris Ault, the pistol coach, was brought in as a consultant and his role was said to include some defense as well. Makes sense that some of your best offensive coaches would have a unique perspective of the defense.

"I know it was a losing program," Childress said when asked what he knew about the Chiefs before coming in, "and usually there are some growing pains with that, not the least of which is just kind of laying down your culture, and I think obviously Coach Reid has done a great job of that. But to be able to lead that way, you've got to have people here to follow. So I think from a player standpoint, from a team standpoint, from the organizational standpoint, what he's put down they've followed. And obviously it's gotten us where we are."

The Kansas City Chiefs finally hired Brad Childress earlier this week. But what the heck is his job title -- spread game analyst / special projects?

Brad Childress, who was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, has such a unique job title that the Chiefs felt compelled to explain what that is. The job title is "Spread game analyst / special projects" which .... I have no idea.

Here's what the Chiefs said about it:

Essentially, coach Childress will research and assist with the scouting and recruiting of the draft eligible players, prior to the April 25-27 event.

He will also conduct thorough research on the spread offense, benefitting not just the offense but also helping the Chiefs defense.

In addition to recruiting and researching, coach will also take on several other projects to benefit head coach Reid and his entire staff, with the collective goal in mind, winning.

Make sense?

It's the "spread game analyst" that has me intrigued considering the rise of the spread offenses in the NFL and that Alex Smith ran Urban Meyer's spread offense while in college at Utah.

After two months of reports talking about it, Brad Childress is finally a member of the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff. He will be an offensive assistant.

It was first rumored way, way back on January 9 that Brad Childress, the Browns offensive coordinator last year and longtime assistant on Andy Reid's staff, was visiting the Chiefs. In the weeks that followed, a number of folks predicted that Childress would eventually land with the Chiefs. He was with the Browns last year but it was unclear if they had released him from his contract to join the Chiefs.

By the time March rolled around, most of us had given up on the idea of Childress joining the Chiefs. But today, out of the blue, there's this from Adam Teicher:

At long last, #Chiefs hire Brad Childress as offensive assistant. Will help in various areas. Nice get for Reid. A veteran offensive voice

Childress was with Reid from 1999-2002 as the quarterbacks coach and from 2003-2005 as the offensive coordinator before landing the Vikings head coaching job. He spent nearly five seasons in Minnesota before his exit, which then led him to Cleveland, where he was the Browns offensive coordinator last season.

And you thought we forgot about the rumors of Brad Childress to the Kansas City Chiefs. It appears that still has a chance of happening, according to the latest reports.

Way back in January, new Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was busy putting his staff together. Word emerged that Reid interviewed Brad Childress for some sort of position on the Chiefs staff.

But then nothing happened. It's now over a month later and we haven't heard any more about Childress joining the Chiefs staff.

We're starting to put together the picture of what's going on. This tweet from Adam Teicher on January 11 seems to foreshadow the possible situation:

Interesting to note that 2 guys #Chiefs would like to hire, Warhop and Childress, come from Browns. Maybe Browns aren't letting them go yet

— Adam Teicher (@adamteicher) January 12, 2013

Then over the weekend came this from Dan Pompei of National Football Post:

Brad Childress still is expected to join Andy Reid's staff in Kansas City as a senior assistant. What's the holdup? He still has not been fired as offensive coordinator of the Browns. But he isn't working for them, either. Seems to be just a matter of time. Perhaps a little byplay between Joe Banner and Reid is at work.

So, I can't say I know exactly what's going on there. Reid and Banner do have a history together from their time in Philly.

The end result, which we really care about, appears to still be on track, which is Childress joining the Chiefs.

Andy Reid is working on his coaching staff, interviewing the in-house candidates earlier this week and now looking at outside options, including former Vikings coach Brad Childress.

Since Andy Reid was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs we've heard a lot of people talking about the coordinator jobs on both offense and defense. Mostly, though, it's been speculation and rumors.

There's now a new report from ESPN's Adam Schefter that feels a little less rumor-y:

Browns OC Brad Childress is in KC today, where he could be hired as either OC or as an advisor to new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

So Brad Childress, huh. He was one of the names brought up over the last week. He worked in Philadelphia with Reid for seven years so I'd be curious what this interview entails. Seems like they know each other well.

Childress may not be the only coach on the way

"I've made calls to coaches," Reid said on Pro Football Talk Live on Wednesday. "I'm starting to bring them in here. We have the first ones on campus."

That's coaches. Plural. So who else is coming?

Update: Adam Teicher has a barrage of news (H/T BAyers2929)
