The Kansas City Chiefs had to face a lot of frustrations at the bye week -- typically a point in the season where a team reflects and reacts. Coming into the season, they were expected to contend for a playoff spot. Instead they find themselves at 1-5 and listed as potentially the worst franchise in football.

To that end, it is not a surprise that they announced a significant change on Monday that Matt Cassel would be benched as the starting quarterback in favor of Brady Quinn. But during today's media session, Romeo Crennel was asked if he considered any others than just quarterback.

"Not the same impact. There is nobody that would have that impact other than the quarterback," said Crennel. "That impacts the whole team, so you look at it and you decide what you're going to do and go forward with it."

Crennel was then asked if he considered any changes to his coaching staff during the bye week.

"No. I did not," said Crennel. "I just thought the quarterback position was the one I needed to change."

If the Chiefs still fail to show any signs of life, those changes will undoubtedly come later.

The announcement from Romeo Crennel today that Brady Quinn will start over Matt Cassel at quarterback is the most powerful statement that the head coach can make at this point.

If you listen to the Twitterverse (or is it Twittersphere?), the move announced on Monday by the Kansas City Chiefs at quarterback doesn't make any difference. Once head coach Romeo Crennel stated that Brady Quinn was the team's new starter over Matt Cassel, the following responses quickly became par for the course:

QB Brady Quinn to start this week, according to #Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel. Good luck with that one.

At first glance, it's easy to agree. After all, it's not as if the Chiefs are trading Matt Cassel for a proven starter who can remake the team's offense. The first game under Quinn's belt as a Chiefs starter looked like more of the same against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6 with 2 interceptions and zero touchdowns that led to a 28-point loss.

But don't be mistaken by the laughter or ridicule. The move was necessary. The move was a sign that the fan's voice has been heard.

The fact is that Romeo Crennel is not in charge of the team's personnel. There are only so many changes that Crennel can make. Within the limitations of his head coaching position, Crennel decided to make a change at the most position of greatest impact and spotlight. That should not be understated.

It's easy to not like the options. Many franchises are aching for a dynamic starting option at quarterback. There's a reason why there are "races" called "Suck For Luck", like the one for the chance to take Andrew Luck with the first overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. They are simply hard to find.

So this isn't a matter of Crennel offering up the Chiefs' savior at quarterback. Instead, the change is an admission. Perhaps it's even a confession from the team that the trade for Cassel four seasons ago did not do what anyone hoped it would do. Structuring the offense around Cassel's abilities (and inabilities) did not work in the end.

Quinn may or may not win more games than Cassel for the rest of 2012, but that's no reason to ridicule the move announced today by Romeo Crennel. Whether or not Quinn is the better option is not the point. The point is that a new direction has been charted in Kansas City at the most important position on the field. Change is coming. Things are not working. And everyone is finally admitting that truth.

Romeo Crennel believed a change was needed on the team and the quarterback position was the greatest place of potential impact to make it.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a major change on Monday with the announcement that Brady Quinn would be the new starting quarterback. It was the biggest change that Romeo Crennel could make as the team's head coach, and it's a sign that something had to be done in light of the team's 1-5 start.

Coming off of the bye, Crennel said he made the announcement to both quarterback around lunchtime on Monday before announcing it to the media.

In his media session today, Crennel led with a length statement about how and why he made the decision to go with Brady Quinn.

[Related Link: VIDEO of Crennel's press conference]

"During my evaluation and trying to impact the team I kind of felt that probably the most impactful move that I could make to get everybody's attention was to change the quarterback, so I'm changing the quarterback and Brady Quinn will be the starter and Matt [Cassel] will be a backup," said Crennel

"I think that that will get everybody's attention, and hopefully that impacts the team, because the quarterback position, that's the one that has the spotlight on it, and it gets criticized and it gets praised, no matter what happens, if it's good or bad. If it's good, it gets the praise, if it's bad, it gets the criticism."

In particular, Crennel noted the "poise" of Quinn in the game against the Bucs, despite the final score of 38-10.

"I thought in the Tampa game he showed some poise, he ran the offense, he was a little rusty, but I think with time and reps and play time, he should improve and get better as we go down the road."

When asked about how the meeting with Quinn went, Crennel said his new starter was obviously excited at the chance to take over the reins.

"He took it like a pro. He sat there pretty much straight-faced, but I felt some excitement emanating from it that here's an opportunity for him. He's going to try to make the best of it."

The Chiefs will find out this Sunday against the Oakland Raiders just how much of the dynamic has really changed.

It seems that nearly everyone -- whether a fan or media member -- believes that it makes no real difference for the Chiefs.

But we are curious at the overall response. Romeo Crennel said he wanted to change the dynamic of the team going forward. Will he be successful with this move? Or did you laugh or sigh? Let us know in the poll below.

This answers a lot of questions that Chiefs fans had coming into this game regarding the quarterback situation. It's hard to not think about the long-term implications that this decision could have for this team moving forward.

How do you all feel about this?
