Earlier this week, Joel and I decided it would be fun to list all the things that were happening the last time the Chiefs won a regular-season game with a quarterback they drafted.

Clark Hunt was a college athlete, Andy Reid was a college offensive line coach and every college student was bobbing his or her head to “Walk Like an Egyptian.”

In other words, it had been a very long time—30 years to be exact.

The 22-year-old Patrick Mahomes ended that drought Sunday, when, at times, sure, he looked like any rookie. But during other times, he flashed brilliance.

There are going to be plays Mahomes will be able to make that few other players in the world could. And he’s not a Patriot, a Steeler or a Packer.

He’s a Chief. He’s your quarterback.

“He came out and made some great throws,” Broncos linebacker Von Miller explained. “He’s a rookie, still, and got out there and played lights out. We had some ones out there and he still came through and played. Hats off to Mahomes.

“He’s going to be the quarterback of the future. He’s going to be a great quarterback. He has great scramble ability. He can scramble and throw the ball. He’s going to be a great quarterback.”

And maybe the best part for Mahomes is that he has something that Alex Smith never had when he was a first-round rookie in San Francisco back in 2005.

Mahomes has an Alex Smith, a 13-year pro in the prime of his career to learn from.

“I mentioned to our guys that he’s so fortunate to have been in that room with Alex Smith,” Andy Reid said in his postgame press conference. “Just to know how to go about doing your job at this level, and he did that this week. He spent the time knowing that he was going to be the guy. Alex was a great support for him.”

When I first read that Reid quote, I debated in my head whether or not it was simple coachspeak.

Reid has to say these things, I figured, because it’s important to reinforce who the man is before the upcoming wild-card game against the Titans Saturday.

Then I kept reading, and Mahomes’ words were telling.

“Alex is an awesome guy,” Mahomes said. “He helped me the entire game. He really showed me what he was seeing out there, showed me things he was recognizing and giving me tips. You really can’t ask for a guy to be in front of you as well as Alex has been for me.”

Smith has been called a lot of things throughout his career in San Francisco and now Kansas City, the most common one being “game manager.” I’d argue that Smith did enough on the field in 2017 to break free from that, hopefully for the rest of his career.

But in watching Mahomes Sunday and hearing the words of thankfulness for Smith after, it’s important to bring the things we don’t get to see to light.

Smith didn’t have to help Mahomes this season, and maybe you wouldn’t have blamed him after the way his exit went down in San Francisco.

But that isn’t who Smith is—and it showed in Mahomes’ play and professionalism.

After years of searching for that one quarterback, it’s kind of funny how things turned out.

Now the Chiefs have two.

And now, five items of note from Sunday.

1. Kareem Hunt won the NFL’s rushing title.

One of you #PrideHeads annoyed me today on Twitter when you wrote to me that Kareem Hunt won the NFL rushing title in a “lame ass way.”

What the Twitter user was referring to was the fact that both Todd Gurley and Le’Veon Bell were sitting Sunday while Hunt opted to play.

First of all, it isn’t Hunt’s fault that those other teams opted to rest their starters. Second of all, Reid revealed after the game that he wanted to sit Hunt, but Hunt came to him and wanted to play.

“He wanted to do this thing,” Reid said. I fought him a little bit on it and he won that fight. He told me he’d get it taken care of quick and he did that. My hat goes off to him.”

One play—35 yards, a touchdown and a rushing title. There are two other players in the history of the Chiefs to win the rushing title and they are Priest Holmes (2001) and Christian Okoye (1989).

In a year the Chiefs finally got their quarterback, they quietly drafted a suitable replacement for the greatest running back in franchise history. Well done by John Dorsey and the personnel staff.

2. How about “The Sherminator”?

Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman had six career carries in seven years headed into Sunday’s game. He had 14 for 40 yards and his first career rushing touchdown and looked like a bulldog doing it.

After the game he also posted this on Instagram:

I don’t know what made Albert Wilson decide to wear a Dad sweatshirt under his jersey Sunday, but if he is going to play like he did, he should do it every week, even if it is September.

Wilson had the first 100-yard game of his career, finishing with 10 catches for 147 yards.

I think it’s worth noting his rhythm with Patrick Mahomes, and if Mahomes is going to be Chiefs’ next starting quarterback, I think it makes all the sense in the world to make sure to keep Wilson. They connected several times on the Chiefs’ game-winning drive Sunday.

“Albert told me, ‘This is what we do. We’ve practiced it and let’s do it,’” Mahomes said. “I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ He made a ton of plays on that last drive.”

Wilson is an unrestricted free agent after the season. It’s time to strike “Pay Bert.”

Like Wilson, Thomas is also an unrestricted free agent after the season.

BRONCOS QB PAXTON LYNCH
On whether he thinks he should be the starting quarterback next season: “Obviously as a football player, I say yes. That’s what I want to do. I want to be the quarterback of this organization. That’s what they brought me here for. That’s why they moved up in the first round to get me. That’s what I believe in my heart. That’s what I’m trying to do and that’s what I’m working to do.”

BRONCOS DE SHELBY HARRIS
On a report Sunday morning on Vance Joseph’s job status: “That’s garbage, he should be here. It’s not Vance’s fault, it was our fault. I stand with Vance 100 percent.”

CHIEFS FB ANTHONY SHERMAN
On having an impactful day: “It was fun. I mean, it was a lot different than what I usually get to do but I enjoyed it. We knew coming into this game that we were going to be down some backs. We didn’t want to put [RB] [Kareem] Hunt out there in case something happens. I took over and just did what I was supposed to do, and luckily we got the win.”

CHIEFS RB KAREEM HUNT
On Sunday’s win: “It’s momentum. We’re keeping it rolling. Winning is the only thing right now. That’s all we need to do, keep winning. Now it’s the second season, so we’ve got to keep winning.”

ANDY REID
On Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: “Patrick’s effort, he’s been getting in early in the morning. Listen, for young quarterbacks coming up through, he’s going about it the right way and spends a ton of time doing it. He’s not banking on the skill that he’s been blessed with. He’s trying to get himself to be the best, and by doing that, spending that time, it pays off in situations like this.”

Patrick Mahomes gets his first win as an NFL starter in a 27-24 win over the Broncos.

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos 27-24 on Sunday to finish the regular season 10-6. Rookie QB Patrick Mahomes, who finished 22/35 for 284 yards and one INT, was the star of the show as Chiefs fans wanted to see a quarterback they drafted win a game for them. Why? Because that hasn't happened in over 30 years (last quarterback drafted by the Chiefs to win a game for them -- Todd Blackledge in 1987).

The Mahomes appearance was in some ways what I expected -- some bad plays (like an interception) but several throws that few others can make. As our own MNChiefsfan said recently, it's not so much about Mahomes proving he can make plays that others can't, he needs to show he can make the other more routine plays that others can. It was a good day for Mahomes.

Welcome to gameday! Or should I say Patrick Mahomes day. The Kansas City Chiefs are resting many of their starters for today’s Week 17 matchup with the Denver Broncos and that means Patrick Mahomes will start for them at QB. Beth Mowins and Jay Feely are on the call for CBS at 3:25 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) this afternoon!

For the Chiefs, it’s an opportunity to get a win with a quarterback they drafted for the first time since ... September 1987. 30 years! (Check AP Instagram for a fun look back at what we were doing then)

The game doesn’t mean anything in the standings for the 9-6 Chiefs because they have already clinched the AFC West title and are locked into the No. 4 seed (where they are likely but not certain to play the Ravens if they beat the Bengals today).

The Chiefs will rest a lot of their starters on offense and defense so the Broncos are 4.5-point favorites in this game where they are starting their second-year QB Paxton Lynch.

Everyone in Kansas City and everyone associated with the Kansas City Chiefs are excited because today you’re going to see the rarest of rare events: a rookie QB starting for the Chiefs. That would be Patrick Mahomes. (Every time I mention Mahomes starting, I feel like I have to mention I also like Alex Smith and am glad he is starting the playoffs for them next week)

This season is the 30th anniversary of the last time the Chiefs had a quarterback they drafted win a game for them. Some of you might remember Brodie Croyle, who went 0-10 to start (and end) his career. He didn’t win one.
There are some fun reactions from Chiefs fans who are excited to see the rookie play today. I’m not sure any Chiefs fan is as optimistic about Mahomes today as NFL Network’s Michael Irvin who predicted an insane stat line for Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to sit many of their starters today against the Denver Broncos because they have already clinched the AFC West title and locked in the No. 4 seed in the NFL playoffs.

I mentioned earlier this week that Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt is 14 yards away from the NFL rushing lead and the man he’s chasing, RB Todd Gurley, is inactive for the Rams today (thanks to 610 Sports pal Jay Binkley for pointing that out). So is Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell, who is one yard behind Hunt.

The Chiefs just listed their inactives for today’s game against the Broncos and Kareem Hunt’s name is not listed. So he will be active. Charcandrick West, the Chiefs backup RB, is out with an illness. So it’ll be Kareem Hunt and Akeem Hunt active today.

But will Kareem Hunt play? Will the Chiefs give him a shot to gain 14 yards to win the NFL’s rushing title?

I can’t imagine a more compelling Week 17 game that doesn’t count for anything in the standings than the Kansas City Chiefs this week.

Teams who aren’t fighting for a playoff spot are either resting their starters (like KC) or hoping to play spoiler. Some other teams have checked out and are thinking about 2018. We’ll see which category the Denver Broncos fall in on Sunday. As 2017 rolls over into 2018, the Chiefs have a chance to move past their 34 years without a franchise QB they drafted. Alex Smith will still have one more shot at a playoff run after this week, but on Sunday, all eyes will be on Patrick Mahomes.

Here are a few reasons to be excited about this week’s game, and a couple of reasons to be concerned. As always, let us know what you’re watching for in the comments.

1) Patrick Mahomes

For nearly every offseason I can remember, we’ve hoped the Chiefs would draft their franchise QB. When I started watching draft prospects, Mahomes jumped off the screen. When the Chiefs traded up, I knew it had to be for Pat. When his name was called, I (along with thousands of other Chiefs fans) literally jumped off of my seat. Through all the speculation of whether or not he was ready, or when he’d get his first start, we watched Alex Smith have his best season ever.

So, the stage is perfectly set for the future of the Chiefs franchise to take the field against the Broncos on New Year’s Eve. Watch to see how he responds as the starting QB and leader this week. He’ll be playing with mostly backups, so IF he lights it up, then all bets are off for 2018.

Prediction: 300 yards and 3 TDs from the rookie will have everyone talking about the future. Why not?

2) TE Orson Charles

He finally got on the board last week with a big 35-yard reception, but it’s his work as a blocker that makes him an important role player on this team going forward. Not the biggest guy at his position, but he wasn’t kidding when he said he’d sacrifice his body for the team. Charles may get more opportunities this week, as Kelce likely gets to rest up for the playoffs. Watch to see if he can be a reliable target and blocker against the Broncos. It might be a chance to win a 2018 job for No. 82.

Prediction: 3 catches this week for Charles for modest yardage, and he continues to stand out as a blocker.

3) Turnover record watch

Marcus Peters has been playing out his mind after his suspension, turning back into a ball-hawking machine. The Chiefs can set an NFL record for fewest turnovers with a clean game this week. With the turnover ratio tipping in the right direction, this team can make a run. Let’s see if they can keep it going this week, even without many of their starters.

Prediction: Without Marcus Peters, the Chiefs only force one turnover this week, but also don’t give the ball away and set a new NFL record.

4) Tackling

Last week, Jakeem Grant’s 65 yard touchdown was a painful example of the struggles the Chiefs defense has in tackling. It starts up front, with the defensive linemen who need to finish in the backfield when they have a chance. Some of the worst misses have come from the secondary, playing without their best tackler (Eric Berry). These guys must focus on fundamental tackling, instead of highlight reel hits or strips. The highlights are great when they work, but can turn into points for opposing offenses when they don’t. Watch to see if the coaches have put an emphasis on tackling this week.

Prediction: Tackling will probably be an issue again this week

5) WRs Demarcus Robinson and Jehu Chesson

These two have been doing what they can to develop in the roles available for them on the 2017 Chiefs. Neither is going to take many targets away from Tyreek Hill or Travis Kelce, so neither has been expected to be featured in the passing game. Both have shown they can contribute on special teams, and as blockers. This week, they may be the starting receivers for the QB that they could spend most of their careers working with. Watch to see how these guys respond. Can they get open and consistently make plays? Can they run crisp routes and gain yards after the catch?

Prediction: Robinson has a big day, going over 100 yards with Mahomes finding him downfield. Chesson will contribute, but not put up big numbers.

6) Offensive line

Will the starters play a full game? We already know Parker Ehinger will get the nod at RG, but no word yet on the tackles. Cam Erving might get significant time this week as well if he’s able to play (he’s been questionable with an illness). Watch these two guys as they get another chance to prove they can be important parts of the Chiefs offensive line in 2018 going forward.

Prediction: Ehinger impresses, Erving is up-and-down

7) Can they run without Kareem?

We’re assuming Kareem Hunt gets the day off, unless they let him get 13 yards for the rushing title. Either way, plan on watching Akeem Hunt carry the load against the Broncos. It’ll be an interesting test for the offensive line and running backs without the ROTY/team MVP candidate on the field. Balance has been key to this offense, and it’s clear that when they get Kareem Hunt going, everything works. Can they get anything going this week with the backups?

Prediction: The Chiefs struggle to run the ball this week. Under 100 yards total.

8) Who can get to the QB?

Even with all the starters on the field, the Chiefs have been inconsistent at rushing the passer. This week, we’re expecting Justin Houston and Tamba Hali to get the day off. Tanoh Kpassagnon has flashed some of the raw ability that led to him being the Chiefs second round pick, but he’s also shown that he has plenty of room to grow as an OLB. Frank Zombo has been solid but unspectacular in significant snaps this season. Chris Jones is the only defensive lineman who can take over games as a pass rusher, but he’s likely going to get some rest this week as well.

Watch to see if Bob Sutton dials up stunts or blitzes to get to the QB, and whether Tanoh can take the next step in becoming an impact player going into next season.

Prediction: 1 sack and little pressure this week, this is a big area of concern going forward.

Saturday's match-up between the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs on CBS will be a record breaker no matter what the score. That's because it will become the fourth game this year where a woman, industry veteran Beth Mowins, will be the play-by-play announcer in the often male-dominated world of sports.

In the past three weeks, the Broncos rank third in the league in rushing yardage (454, an average of 151.3 per game), with a league-leading 36.7 rushing attempts per game. The commitment to the run helped the Broncos' offense post its best scoring outputs since December in wins over the Jets and Colts, and it gave the team plenty of early opportunities last week against Washington, although it only managed to get three points out of five first-half drives that crossed midfield.

Last week I went 12-3 on the straight up picks (I missed the Panthers/Bucs game, should have gone 13-3), and I went 5-5 against the spread with a couple of games being a push.

I’d say that’s a pretty average week.

This will be updated as the lines change, up until I make my bets. Remember, if you are planning on making money off of these, don’t. I do this for fun, not to feed my wife and kids.

When betting against the spread I pick what I think the spread to each game should be. Then if my spread is two or more points away from the actual spread, I place a bet on the team my spread favors.

Also to note, week 17 is always a risky bet due to teams resting starters and other teams having nothing to play for.
