Chicago Bears QB Connor Shaw thinks the hit from KC Chiefs DE Rakeem Nunez-Roches that broke his leg was a “cheap BS” play. Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton politely disagrees.

The morning after the Chiefs-Bears game when news of Shaw’s broken leg came out, the Bears QB tweeted and then deleted this:“Injuries are a part of the game & I understand that. This should've been avoided. No need for that type of cheap BS!”

75 percent of our readers don’t think it was dirty, according to this poll. Was it dirty?

“I didn’t pay that much attention to it,” Sutton said on Monday. “To me it looked like two guys that hit and as they slid down it rolled up. It’s an unfortunate thing. There isn’t anyone out there whether it’s coaches, players or anyone that wants to see anyone get hurt. Like we talked about here, we’d like to have everyone here available on our roster and I believe every NFL team wants the same.

“I didn’t personally see it like that. As a player, of course you’re disappointed. He’s trying to make the team and do a great job. That’s a tough injury to see happen in the third game. You feel for him and you understand his disappointment. I honestly didn’t see anything wrong with what happened. It’s an unfortunate part of playing a contact sport.”

The Kansas City Chiefs ended up with plenty of winners over the Chicago Bears. Here are a few of them:

WINNERS

WR Chris Conley

Small thing but he caught two passes for 30 yards and both of them went for first downs. When you compare that with Albert Wilson’s one catch for four yards - and a drop - it looks pretty good. Conley is your No. 2 on the outside.

DE Chris Jones

The Chiefs rookie sure looked good again. The Chiefs are going to continue to give him a little more and a little more. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was rotating in quite a bit more in Week 16 than he is in Week 2. He is really good on passing downs - quick initial step, pass rush moves to beat an offensive lineman and long arms to bat down passes, which we saw on Saturday. How can they get him more playing time? Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton has a good problem on his hands.

How can you not love this?

CB Phillip Gaines

He only played 11 snaps (according to the NFL’s snap counts ... MNchiefsfan had it at 10 snaps. It’s too early for me to go back and confirm). He didn’t re-injure himself and he didn’t give up any big passing plays. MNChiefsfan wrote about Gaines here and did it better than I could. Go read that but the point is the absence of any negatives here is good news.

LB Derrick Johnson

The old man has it, huh? He had one play early in the game where he missed a near DJ Special (which is him shooting through the line like a rocket) and then missed the tackle. I tweeted that he would want that one back. Since that play, he was a monster. He came back and successfully executed a DJ Special taking down the ball carrier in the backfield and he had a sack. Read Sam Mellinger’s love letter to DJ here.

He can get around linemen and seems to have a ton of energy. It just looks like he’s having a lot of fun and he’s often better than the guy trying to block him.

Things that make you go hmm about Knile Davis

Tyreek Hill took the first kick return over Knile, who was said to be the top kick returner on the team.

Then Darrin Reaves saw a first team snap at running back before Knile did.

Sooo, about Knile ... is this the writing on the wall? The Chiefs cut downs are on Tuesday and Knile’s a name we’ve been wondering about. In most other years, this wouldn’t be much of a question. Knile would make it. However, the Chiefs are deep at running back this year. They may have to end up cutting a good player like him.

I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion that he’s gone but I’m certainly wondering.

Other observations

I’m not sure whose fault it is but the Chiefs first drive was ruined by Spencer Ware tripping on third and two. Demetrius Harris ran past Ware to block on the right side of the line while Ware went up the middle and as he went he clipped the legs of Harris. Ware fell short of the first down. That’s a killer mistake. The Chiefs are a veteran team where even in preseason those sorts of things shouldn’t happen.

On the plus side, Harris had a third down pickup and another first down catch down the seam.

Phillip Gaines started the game. No big plays.

Justin March starts over Ramik Wilson with Josh Mauga still out. If there has to be a cut here, remember this one.

Chiefs GM John Dorsey spent a few minutes in the booth and he talked about RB Darrin Reaves and his sneaky strength. Remember that on cut down weekend.

Tyreek Hill dropped a short pass he should’ve caught.

The Chiefs were facing a third and 14 against the Bears on Saturday afternoon. As you know, this is not where the Chiefs excel. They are not good on third and long. Alex Smith apparently didn’t care because he did a great job eluding the pass rush and running for 15 yards and the first down.

The KC Chiefs visit the Chicago Bears in the third game on the preseason schedule. There are a few things I’ll be looking for in this game.

Welcome back, Phillip Gaines

Andy Reid says there’s a good chance that Gaines, the presumed No. 2 cornerback, will make his preseason debut. This would be some much needed good news for the Chiefs as the second corner position is arguably the most important position battle remaining. The Chiefs other corners have gotten a lot of work so I’m curious to see how much the Chiefs play him as he continues to come off his torn ACL early last season. I wouldn’t mind giving him a bunch of time in the first half and letting Jay Cutler go at him a few times. He needs the reps.

Keep scoring, offense

For the offense, it’s easy. Put points on the board. The Chiefs under Alex Smith have scored on every drive except one this preseason. Alex is sharp: 12-of-16 for 173 yards, one touchdown. The running game has been featuring Spencer Ware with Charcandrick West banged up last week and Jamaal Charles not playing. The offensive line has looked good overall with a brief hiccup last week. There’s a lot to like. The offense could be carrying the team this year. Would the kids say the Chiefs offense is on fleek this preseason? I feel so out of touch.

How about we stop the run, mmmkay?

The Chiefs run defense has been ... not very good. Perhaps it stands out because the Chiefs were so good at stopping the run last year. Perhaps the run defense isn’t good because Eric Berry, Justin Houston and others are out. Perhaps the Chiefs just won’t be very good at stopping the run this year. It’s hard for me to believe that last one because the Chiefs were a top three PFF run defense last year.

“They’re pretty good run teams, so it’s been a good test for us,” Andy Reid said. “There’s a couple things we could do better in there, so we’ll try to keep improving in those areas.”

This team just needs some time to figure itself out. There are a lot of pieces missing. They won’t be as good as they were the past few years but they’re better than what we’ve seen at times this preseason. Time for them to prove it against Chicago.

Chris Conley’s encore

The Chiefs WR took a step to securing the No. 2 receiver job with his three-catch, 66-yard performance last Saturday, including a 37-yard audible from Alex. This would be great news because physically Conley is the obvious choice for this role, although Albert Wilson is tough as nails. Let’s see Conley with another strong day. There should be opportunities for him this season because, if I’m a defensive coordinator, my focus is on Jeremy Maclin and Travis Kelce.

Chris Jones, pass rusher

I enjoy watching him. A lot. We haven’t seen a defensive linemen like him in a while. The Chiefs starting d-linemen are excellent at what they do but Jones adds another dimension. Give me a sack, Chris. Just one. That’s all I ask for.
