Andy Reid: Hollywood Brown is ‘getting close’ to being ready to play

It’s possible that Kansas City’s free-agent wideout could be ready to play in Sunday’s game against Cincinnati.

Wide receiver Hollywood Brown was the Kansas City Chiefs’ splashiest offseason acquisition for the upcoming season. But since he was injured on the opening offensive play of the preseason Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, we don’t really know what kind of contribution he can make in the Kansas City offense.

Since his sternoclavicular joint dislocation was essentially the same injury that former Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered in the opening game of the 2019 season, it’s been widely assumed that Brown would miss about four weeks. Thursday night’s season opener against the Baltimore Ravens was just a couple of days less than four weeks. So could Brown be ready for this Sunday afternoon’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, which will be five weeks and three days since he was hurt?

“Listen: everybody’s different,” head coach Andy Reid reminded reporters during his regular Monday press availability. “[But] it’s that same type of injury. He’s getting close. I know he’s feeling better. We’ve got to just kind of see where it goes from here. They’ve been doing these periodic tests on him, making sure that he’s headed in the right direction — scans and all that. [It] looks like he’s headed in the right direction.”

The team will issue the first injury report of the week on Wednesday. For Brown to have a chance to play on Sunday, would probably have to be at least a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice. We’ll be watching closely.
