Travis & Jason Kelce’s ‘New Heights’ podcast: Travis goes to the White House

Travis shares the warning he received from the Secret Service during his trip to the White House.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ superstar tight end Travis Kelce and his older brother — former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce — host a weekly podcast called "New Heights." The title is an homage to the Cleveland Heights neighborhood in which they grew up.

Last week, Jason and Travis disparaged the international classic film, “Life is Beautiful” — which was written, directed and starred Italian filmmaker Roberto Benigni. They argued that Adam Sandler should have won best actor for portraying a Creole linebacker with an overbearing mother in “The Waterboy” instead of Benigni. But after watching “Life is Beautiful,” Jason gave an update to his thoughts on the situation.

The brothers also discussed Travis’ trip to the White House, where the President received the Chiefs to celebrate their Super Bowl LVII Championship. In addition, Travis also attended the annual Big Slick charity event that benefits Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

1. Don’t tase me, bro!

If you remember the last time the Chiefs visited the White House, Travis attempted to take the podium and address the crowd. Fortunately for the superstar tight end, his good friend and quarterback Patrick Mahomes was there to usher him away from the mic and back to safety.

Travis said the Secret Service told him when he arrived that they would not tolerate similar shenanigans this time.

“[The Secret Service] weren’t too happy with me. Remember how I was talking about how I had an expired ID and I got in the White House. I caught s—t for that.”

Last year, when the team visited the White House, Travis arrived at the event with an expired ID, but he still managed to gain entry. The President’s bodyguards didn’t take kindly to him not following protocol.

Travis said he made sure not to make the same mistake this time.

“I made sure I brought my passport this time... to make sure I was official and doing things the right way.”

Travis alluded to being on his best behavior during the team’s visit because, apparently, the Secret Service made it known that if he stepped out of line, there would be consequences.

“You know if you go up to that podium, we are authorized to tase you.”

Luckily for Travis, the President has a sense of humor and invited him to say a few words. In the amusing interaction below, Travis politely declined, citing the warning he received from the Secret Service.

2. Da Bears

Parodying some of the all-time classic skits in Saturday Night Live history, Travis took the stage as part of the Big Slick Weekend and caught some heat from legendary Bears fans Bob Swerski (played by George Wendt), Carl Wollarski (portrayed by Robert Smigel) and Todd O’Connor (played by Sudeikis in place of the late Chris Farley who originally starred in the role).

“I got to do an SNL skit with the legends themselves,” said Travis, reflecting on the event. “It was so cool— we grew up watching that skit.”

The whole skit is worth a watch and pretty funny, but the highlight of this most recent edition of Bill Swerski’s Super Fans had to be when Sudeikis puts Travis on the spot and grills him about when he’s going to tie the knot with his girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

“When are you going to make an honest woman out of her?”

3. Travis relives his only passing touchdown

In this week's Teach Tape segment, Travis breaks down his touchdown pass to former Chiefs wide receiver Byron Pringle in the 2021 AFC Wild Card Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Walking to the line, the team explodes into a wishbone formation, explaining that when they had done this in the past, Kelce would usually keep the ball and try to run for the score,

“One of our goal-line plays in the past has been to move me to wildcat quarterback and basically just get my big ass 2 yards, 3 yards in the end zone.”

The pre-snap motion continues with Mahomes, who is now lined up as a tailback, shifting out wide on a wheel route and putting the box safety into conflict.

“We try to throw a little window dressing on it,” said Travis, “makes it look nice and gets the defense thinking. Sometimes, it switches up gap assignments.”

Once the ball is snapped, Travis fakes the handoff to Tyreek Hill and pretends he’s going to keep it and rush it himself.

“I act as if I’m reading the defensive end on the right here. Give it a few steps up into the line to make it feel like it’s a run.”

At this point, all Byron Pringle has to do is maintain inside leverage and beat his man.

“It was an easy little five to 10-yard pitch and catch.”
