Brady VS Mahomes – 6-year comparison

Introduction

There’s been a lot of talk of if Mahomes is the new GOAT, if he’s the baby GOAT, if he even has a chance at catching Tom Brady to become the GOAT. Well, instead of talking about it, let’s run a side-by-side comparison and see if Mahomes is on pace to become the GOAT:

Analysis

Before SB LVIII, Mahomes leads Brady in every category except two: They’re tied in SB MVPs and Brady has 1 more ring. In every meaningful category of individual accomplishment, Mahomes is on pace to pass Tom Brady.

Brady had 3 MVPs his entire 22-year career. Mahomes already has 2.

Brady was 1st team All-Pro those same 3 seasons. Mahomes with 2.

Brady has 15 Pro Bowl selections, basically 2 out of every 3 seasons he played. Mahomes is 6 for 6.

Pat has thrown for 10,000 more yards than Tom meaning he could take 2-3 seasons off and still be on pace to break his yards record. The same with TDs where Mahomes has nearly 100 more.

Brady played in 15 Conference Championships in 22 years. Mahomes is 6 for 6.

Brady won 7 rings in 22 years, Mahomes is on pace with 2 in 6 except that it’s really 2 in 5. He can blow past him with a win, putting himself on pace for 7 SBs in 14 years. Even if he loses this year, he’s still on pace to reach Tom in 21 years.

Mahomes has played better in the playoffs than Brady did his first 6 years with an absurd 5.6-1 TD-Int ratio. That means he’s had to carry the Chiefs more to get the same (and possibly better) results. What if Mahomes begins to have the same level of supporting cast as Brady?

Mind the Gap

Brady’s rings came in 2 bunches: 3 in 4 years and then 4 in 7 years. In between he had a 10-year gap. If Mahomes keeps making AFCCG’s and then it’s a coin flip whether he wins that game and another coin flip if he wins the Super Bowls he advances to, he’ll win at least 2 more in that same span. If he then finishes strong like Tom winning 4 in 7, he’ll pass him when he hits his 3rd in 5.

Mind the Other Gap

And another thing, Mahomes is 28. Brady was 30 at this same point in his career. Even if Mahomes doesn’t have the same longevity to play when he’s 45, he can play the same number of seasons by age 43.

Conclusion

Is Mahomes the GOAT? Let’s say, no, not yet. Is he on pace to be the GOAT? Absolutely. Win or lose in Vegas, Mahomes on pace to tie or break every record Brady has, including the 7 rings.
