The streak is over.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced that tight end Travis Kelce has been ruled out for their Week 18 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. The team made the decision official via its X account.

There had been questions about whether Kelce would play at least the first quarter, considering his streak of seven straight 1,000-yard seasons. Kelce’s streak is especially impressive since no other tight end in NFL history has more than three.

Kelce appeared on this week’s injury report due to a neck injury, and he could only log limited practices. Head coach Andy Reid and Kelce decided to make the call with nothing to gain regarding playoff seeding.

The tight end only played in 15 games this season after an injury in practice forced him to miss Kansas City’s opening-night game against the Detroit Lions. Had that not occurred, perhaps he would not have even needed Week 18. He finishes the 2023 season with 93 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns.

Earlier in the day, Kansas City downgraded quarterback Patrick Mahomes from doubtful to out due to a coach’s decision. Defensive ends Mike Danna and George Karlaftis are considered questionable due to the coach’s decision.
