Madden Simulation: Blaine Gabbert takes the wheel

In Week 18, Kansas City is on the road in Los Angeles

Here's what happened in our simulation:

First quarter

The battle of the backup quarterbacks between Easton Stick and Blaine Gabbert started off hot. Stick connected with wide receiver Quentin Johnston for 20 yards, but the Chargers would end up punting.

Gabbert took off running for 11 yards and took a massive shot, holding onto the football. Gabbert would not complete a pass on the Chiefs' first drive, as they ended up punting.

The Chargers would open up the scoring, as Stick hit Joshua Palmer on a streak of 24 yards for a touchdown. Before the big pass, the Chargers offense was throwing short passes and ran with their backs.

Gabbert was experiencing pressure from the Chargers pass rush. The Chargers sacked Gabbert twice, and linebacker Kenneth Murray intercepted Gabbert and set the Chargers up on the Chiefs' 15-yard line before the end of the quarter.

End of the first quarter: Chargers 7, Chiefs 0

Second quarter

After Murray's interception, it only took three running plays, two from Austin Ekeler. Ekeler would help contribute to the Chargers' second touchdown of the game.

Gabbert's first completion came in the second quarter from a five-yard in route to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Gabbert connected with Travis Kelce for 31 yards. This put Kelce over the 1,000-yard mark for the eighth consecutive year. After that catch, Andy Reid removed Kelce from the game.

Later on the drive, Gabbert took off running for a first down and more, but when Gabbert was being tackled, he fumbled the ball, which the Chargers recovered.

With the Chargers already being up two scores, they pounded the rock with Ekeler. Ekeler would score his second touchdown of the game, putting the Chargers up by three scores.

Khalil Mack strip-sacked Gabbert as the ball rolled into the end zone, recovered by Tuli Tuipulotu for the touchdown.

Gabbert would fumble again scrambling out of the pocket. It was once again recovered by the Chargers. Three plays later, Johnston would put the Chargers up by five scores.

The Chiefs finally put a drive together with backup quarterback Chris Oludokun. Oludokun made plays scrambling out of the pocket, connecting with Valdes-Scantling for more than one first down play. Oludokun would run into the end zone for his first career touchdown inside the EA Universe.

End of the second quarter: Chargers 35, Chiefs 7

Third quarter

The Chiefs came out of halftime motivated to score. Oludokun and Noah Gray connected four different times on the Chiefs' first drive out of the half. Gray caught Oludokun's first touchdown pass of his career.

The Oludokun-Gray connection didn't stop there. Following a Chargers three-and-out, the Chiefs offense put together another scoring drive that ended with a Gray touchdown.

End of the third quarter: Chargers 45, Chiefs 28

Fourth quarter

Oludokun got the game back to a two-score deficit, but the Chargers’ run game with Ekeler was too much for the Chiefs defense.

Final score: Chargers 56, Chiefs 35
