The Game

The Kansas City Chiefs are on the road to play the Green Bay Packers in Week 13’s edition of “Sunday Night Football” at historic Lambeau Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be broadcast on NBC — locally on KSHB/41.

Currently leading the AFC West with an 8-3 record, the defending NFL champions now control their destiny. By winning the final six games of the regular season, they will hold the AFC’s No. 1 postseason seed.

The Packers have a much more difficult road ahead of them. With a 5-6 record that puts them in the NFC North’s third position, the Packers will likely need six wins to remain in the playoff hunt.

Through its first seven games, Kansas City was only two points removed from a perfect record; it had been marred only by the team’s season-opening 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions. Since then, however, it has gone 2-2 by registering losses to the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles — while defeating the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders.

Green Bay, in contrast, won only two of its first seven matchups. But after that, it’s won three of the last four — including victories over the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers and the Lions. But it might easily have been a four-game winning streak. With three seconds remaining in Week 10’s 23-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, quarterback Jordan Love’s game-winning touchdown pass to Christian Watson was intercepted by the Steelers’ Damontae Kazee.

Now in his third season, Love became the Packers’ starter after four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets in the offseason. On Sunday, he’ll be making his 13th NFL start. His first came against the Chiefs during his rookie season, when Rodgers missed the game after testing positive for COVID-19. Love completed 19 of 34 passes for 190 yards, a touchdown and an interception as the Chiefs won 13-7.

Kansas City’s reigning MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be playing his first game at Lambeau as he continues to find the right matchups in his wide receiver corps. During Week 12’s 31-17 victory in Las Vegas, second-round rookie wideout Rashee Rice made his case to be Mahomes’ main target behind tight end Travis Kelce, collecting eight receptions for 107 yards (and a touchdown) on 10 targets.
