Kansas City Chiefs vs Buffalo Bills, 2022 AFC Divisional Playoffs Set Number: X163914 TK1

The Game

For the NFL’s Week 14, the Kansas City Chiefs welcome the Buffalo Bills to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be carried on CBS — locally on KCTV/5.

Including postseason contests, the Chiefs and Bills have met five times since Kansas City’s Andy Reid and Buffalo’s Sean McDermott (a longtime assistant under Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles) have led these teams. Each one of them has been a showdown between two of the AFC’s top teams. The Bills have won two of the three regular-season matchups (including the last two), but the Chiefs won both playoff contests.

The most recent of these was the famous Divisional round game at Arrowhead following the 2021 season, in which both squads scored twice in the final two minutes of the game. The home team had the last score, forcing overtime with a three-play, 44-play drive that used the final 13 seconds of regulation — and then on the eighth play of the extra period, Kansas City advanced to the AFC Championship on Patrick Mahomes’ 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce.

The Chiefs enter Sunday’s game with an 8-4 record that gives them a strong hold on the AFC West and ranks them third in the AFC. By winning the final five games of the season — and seeing the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens each lose one of their last five matchups — Kansas City will secure to AFC’s top postseason seed. But there’s a problem: the Chiefs have lost three of their last five games.

The Bills pull into Arrowhead with a 6-6 record that is good for second place in the AFC East. Their chance to win a fourth-straight division title is likely gone — and if the season ended today, Buffalo would miss the playoffs for only the second time in the seven seasons McDermott has led it. Their best chance to make the postseason begins with five wins to close their schedule — but just like the Chiefs, the Bills have lost three of their last five.

So while Sunday’s game will not be exactly like the previous five matchups between Kansas City and Buffalo, the stakes will still be extremely high. Both teams should be expected to leave everything on the field.
