The Game
The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers open their preseason schedules at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). The game will be carried locally on KSHB/41.
The Chiefs enter 2021 after posting a franchise-best regular-season record of 14-2 and advancing to their second straight Super Bowl appearance, in which they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9.
In the offseason, they sought to rebuild their aging offensive line, which had been ravaged by injuries in 2020 — and had been an obvious weakness in the championship loss. The team is expected to start five new offensive linemen on Saturday — including three rookies.
They will be protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who remains one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. In 2020, he led the league with 316 passing yards per game — and ranked third in passer rating behind the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers and the Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson.
After facing the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV after the 2019 season, the 49ers posted a 6-10 record to finish last in the NFC West. Fourth-year starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo fought an ankle injury throughout the season, starting only six games. Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard filled in, combining for a 3-7 record.
So the 49ers traded into the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft, selecting North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, who will be making his first appearance in a 49ers uniform on Saturday night. Garoppolo, however, is expected to start the game — and will likely be the starter when the regular season begins in September.
