Fútbol ❤️ Football.
That’s how Kansas City’s Sporting KC soccer club summarized Tuesday’s announcement that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (who else?) has joined the team’s ownership group.

“I am grateful to join Sporting KC’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love,” said Mahomes in the announcement. “Sporting is a community-oriented club and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”
Sporting’s principal owner Cliff Illig welcomed Mahomes to the ownership group.
“In addition to achieving excellence on the field, he is deeply committed to giving back to the community and elevating the sport of soccer,” said Illig. “Patrick is also accustomed to cultivating a winning culture, and we look forward to contending for championships at Children’s Mercy Park well into the future.”
Mahomes has often been seen at Sporting’s home field — most recently during the Gold Cup match between the United States and Canada on June 18, drawing an ovation from the crowd and posing for photos with United States (and Sporting) midfielder Gianluca Busio.

Mahomes now has an ownership stake in two Kansas City sports franchises: Sporting and the Kansas City Royals, in which he invested in June of 2020. His fiancée Brittany Matthews also owns an interest in the Kansas City NWSL women’s soccer team.
