On Wednesday, CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso released a two-round mock draft. One of his noteworthy predictions was that quarterback Justin Fields would fall to the Denver Broncos at the ninth pick. But with the Kansas City Chiefs’ first-round pick, he went in an unexpected direction.
31. Christian Barmore • DL • Alabama
Prospect Rank: 25th
Position Rank; 3rdKansas City’s defensive front could use another quality inside rusher and Barmore can be that dude for the Chiefs.
Then when the Chiefs went back on the clock at 63, he landed on Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth.
Mind you... at 31, Trapasso still had offensive tackle prospects Sam Cosmi, Liam Eichenberg and Jackson Carman available. So were EDGE players Jayson Oweh and Gregory Rousseau — and wide receivers Terrace Marshall and Kadarius Toney.
In a two-round mock a week ago, Trapasso also took Barmore at 31 — but used the 63rd pick on Notre Dame offensive lineman Aaron Banks. Two weeks ago, his one-round mock sent Syracuse cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu to the Chiefs in the first round.
Given their current needs, it’s hard to see how the picks Trapasso made in these projections would make sense for the Chiefs. As we so often see, it’s one thing to have an opinion about the draft’s best players. It’s quite another to also understand the positional needs of every NFL team.
