There’s less than two weeks until the NFL Draft, so the end of our mock draft parade is within sight. Courage.
This latest one is from former University of Tennessee defensive back Charles Davis — his first of the year. Published Friday on NFL.com, it predicts no team will trade up to get quarterback Justin Fields. Instead, Fields will simply be chosen by the Atlanta Falcons with the fourth pick — after Mac Jones is taken by the San Francisco 49ers with the third — while the New England Patriots stand... ahem... pat at 15 to select quarterback Trey Lance.
But as always, our main concern is the Kansas City Chiefs — for which Davis projects a solid offensive tackle.
31. Liam Eichenberg • OT • Notre Dame
Eichenberg played left tackle at Notre Dame, but he projects best on the right side in the pros and would fill a major need for Kansas City.
Unlike many recent mocks that have suggested the Chiefs would address a position besides offensive tackle at 31, Davis returns to previous thinking. Although sees Christian Darrisaw falling all the way to the Washington Football Team at 19, the three other top tackle prospects — Penei Sewell, Rashawn Slater and Teven Jenkins — are all gone when the Chiefs go on the clock. So are other players recently projected to the Chiefs — including edge prospects Azeez Ojulari, Jayson Oweh and Joe Tryon, along with wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. — so Davis’ mock might actually be construed as pretty reasonable.
We can argue whether Eichenberg is the next-best available tackle for Kansas City — some would argue for Samuel Cosmi or Alex Leatherwood here — but this first-round pick would likely satisfy a lot of Chiefs fans.
