3 players the Chiefs could trade up to acquire in the NFL Draft

We talked about it in the latest episode of the Arrowhead Pride Laboratory.

On Monday’s mailbag edition of the Arrowhead Pride Laboratory, we were asked for players we would be interested in getting by trading up to into the mid-20s for in the 2021 NFL Draft — which would likely require the Kansas City Chiefs to give up a third-round pick.

Here are the players we would consider jumping up to get:

WR Devonta Smith, Alabama (Craig Stout’s suggestion)

If Smith falls due to the concerns over his frame, the Chiefs could be the team to capitalize, moving up to acquire a special talent we have given a first-round grade. Smith may not solve the Chiefs’ “X” receiver problems, but they would add an exceptional football player at a great value. He would be worth the risk of moving up.

OT Jalen Mayfield, Michigan (my suggestion)

Mayfield has earned a top-20 spot in our KC Draft Guide rankings — and for good reason. He has improved every year of his collegiate career, is still very young and with immense upside and put out some great 2020 tape. If the run on tackles starts early — and continues through in the first round — the Chiefs may feel the need to take matters into their own hands. An aggressive swing for Mayfield would secure a high-ceiling player who could be a dominant tackle for years to come. The arrow is pointing up for Mayfield — and the Chiefs would be smart to get a player of his talent for their offensive line.

WR Rashod Bateman, Minnesota (Matt Lane’s suggestion)

In a scenario where a run on wide receivers happens early, Bateman could be the last of the higher-tier wideouts available in this class — especially if the Chiefs think they need an “X” receiver. In the first two rounds of the draft, few fit that profile — and Bateman is one of the best. In this range, Bateman would be a fair value — but if they think it’s a pressing need, the Chiefs may need to be aggressive.
