Oweh needs some work on his technique, but he plays hard and he has a ton of talent. Lost in the poor play of the Chiefs’ offensive line in the Super Bowl was their inability to pressure the quarterback. Oweh would help fix that.

DID YOU WATCH THE SUPER BOWL? Yes? So you don’t need me to tell you that the Chiefs need offensive line help. They signed former Patriots guard Joe Thuney to a massive contract this offseason, but Kansas City still needs someone to protect Patrick Mahomes’s blind side. The team cut both starting tackles from last season but failed to sign Trent Williams in free agency. KC also pursued JuJu Smith-Schuster, suggesting the team could look for a receiver in the draft. But the best bang for their buck might be on defense, where an edge rusher or another cornerback would almost assuredly help them come playoff time.

During the 2019 season Garoppolo had the highest completion percentage rate of any NFL quarterback of throws 20 or more yards. Garoppolo completed 61 percent. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes was second at 51 percent.

Niner wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders ran a post and gained a step on Chiefs rookie defensive back Rashad Fenton.

Sanders was open. Not wide open like he could stop and make a sandwich. Open just enough for a Hall of Fame throw.

Sacks

Current record: Michael Strahan — 22.5 (2001)

Strahan’s sacks record has been challenged on multiple occasions since he set the mark, although no player has been able to get that half a sack to match him. Jared Allen had 22 sacks in 2011 and Justin Houston also reached 22 in 2014. An extra game would have given them a great opportunity to pass Strahan and dethrone him of his record.

Aaron Donald finished with 20.5 sacks in 2018, so a 17th game would have put him in an excellent position to match Strahan. Ditto for J.J. Watt in 2012 and 2014 (20.5 sacks) and Shaquil Barrett in 2019 (19.5). All these players have the potential for multi-sack games, which would put Strahan’s mark on notice in Week 18.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are more than a quarterback away from contending.

As important as Mahomes has been for the Chiefs’ recent success, he hasn’t done it alone. Before Kansas City drafted him, they were already a playoff team. Having a top defense and wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce, two of the best players at their respective positions has definitely helped too.

Lawrence could become the best quarterback in Jaguars history, but he won’t succeed unless the organization surrounds him with talent, as there’s only so much a franchise quarterback can do without help. Think of Aaron Rodgers late in his career or Drew Brees in the early 2010s. Without enough weapons on offense or a competent defense, a quarterback can’t win many games.

Chiefs sign former Rams center Austin Blythe

Blythe, 28, first joined the league as a seventh-round selection of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Rams claimed Blythe from waivers in the spring of 2017. After starting just one game in 2017, he started all but one of the Rams’ regular-season games over the next three years, and he has started five playoff games.

He is a native of Williamsburg, Iowa. A two-time All-State center in high school, he started four years for the Iowa Hawkeyes. In his senior season, he was a finalist for the Rimington Award, which is given to the nation’s top collegiate center.
