On the Friday edition of the Arrowhead Pride Laboratory podcast, we looked at the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster as a whole, identifying areas where the team needs to make improvements. At key positions, some free-agency markets are drying up. We took a look at several players the team should target. Here are three of them:
LT Russell Okung
At left tackle, Okung is the highest-ceiling player still remaining. Now 33, he has had his struggles staying healthy — but when on the field, he is a capable player. The Chiefs could explore a one-year deal and then select a replacement early in the draft, giving a rookie a year to develop while ensuring Mahomes is protected on his blind side. At minimum, the hope would be that Okung could stay healthy far enough into the season that a rookie tackle could be ready to step in.
WR Juju Smith-Schuster
Byron Pringle is simply not the answer as the team’s second wide receiver. He is a good piece on the roster, but relying on him as this team’s X receiver is a downgrade. Smith-Schuster can operate as an X receiver on the line of scrimmage — but possesses plenty of versatility as a great slot receiver, too. As much as the Chiefs move their wide receivers to isolate Travis Kelce on the back side of their formations, Smith-Schuster would comfortably blend into this offense. He’s one of the younger free agents available, giving the Chiefs an opportunity to sign him to multiple years in a depressed market.
DE Jadeveon Clowney
Clowney is coming off a disastrous year. After losing out on some high-dollar prove-it deals, he settled for millions less — and then put together a dud of a season. His pass-rushing productivity was down significantly — but in that regard, Clowney is a bounce-back candidate. He’s a quality run defender who fits Spagnuolo’s profile for defensive end. He would make a lot of sense for the Chiefs.
