The Game

We’re finally there!

It’s the final game of the 2020 NFL season, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs defending their 2019 championship against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be broadcast on CBS — locally on KCTV/5.

Finishing their season with a franchise-best 14-2 record and their fifth consecutive AFC West championship — another team record — the Chiefs entered the postseason with the AFC’s first seed and only bye. The defeated the Cleveland Browns 22-17 in the Divisional round before winning the AFC title with a 38-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

The Buccaneers finished their season 11-5 — but after finishing second to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South, they had to settle for a fifth-seed Wild Card playoff berth. They made the most of it, beating the Washington Football Team 31-23, the Saints 30-20 and finally the first-seeded Green Bay Packers 31-26 to claim the NFC crown.

This game is widely being touted as one of the greatest quarterback matchups in Super Bowl history. Now completing his third season as a starter, 25-year-old Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is starting his second straight championship game after being named MVP of his first — and league MVP in the season before that. Facing him will be longtime New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who will be starting his 10th Super Bowl as he completes his first season with the Buccaneers. The 43-year-old Brady is seeking his seventh league championship.

The two quarterbacks have faced each other in four NFL games. One of them will be leaving Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium with a 3-2 record against the other. Brady will want revenge for Tampa Bay’s 27-24 loss to the Chiefs in Week 12, while Mahomes will be seeking revenge for the 2018 AFC Championship, in which Brady’s Patriots defeated the Chiefs 37-31 in overtime.

But there is a lot more history wrapped up in this game. Kansas City could become the first team since Brady’s 2004 New England squad to repeat as league champions, which they accomplished by defeating Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX. Meanwhile, Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo wears a Super Bowl ring he earned by doing the same job with the New York Giants in 2007, holding Brady and the Patriots offense to their lowest point total of their previously-undefeated season in a 17-14 loss to the Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

However it plays out, this game should be one to remember.
