Report: J.J. Watt seeking QB, supporting cast in next team

Could the former Texans defensive end wind up in Kansas City?

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Ed Werder tweeted that former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt — already known to want to sign with a team contending for a Super Bowl — is prioritizing quarterback and supporting personnel in his search for a new team.

Does this mean that Watt would consider the Kansas City Chiefs as a good landing spot? It’s certainly possible. But a better question might be whether the Chiefs would consider Watt — who will be 32 when the season begins — as a good fit for them.

And then there’s the money. Watt’s reported priorities notwithstanding, there are other teams that will have more to spend in free agency. While it’s possible the Chiefs could make moves that could give them enough cap space to make a deal with Watt, would they consider that a good use of their financial resources? Or would they prefer to use them on younger players?

While it’s true that Watt has missed a lot of time with injuries in recent seasons, he started all 16 games for Houston in 2020, collecting 52 tackles (36 solo, 14 for loss), five sacks, 17 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, an interception and seven passes defensed.

Much will depend on the interest Watt generates in free agency. It’s a situation worth watching.
