The Game

Monday Night Football comes to Arrowhead Stadium as the Kansas City Chiefs take on the New York Giants. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN — locally on KMBC/9.

The Chiefs — now holding down last place in the AFC West with a 3-4 record — come into the game desperate for a victory following a bitter 27-3 defeat at the hands of the Tennessee Titans in Week 7. In that game, Kansas City scored fewer points than in any other game since Andy Reid took over as head coach in 2013.

With a 2-5 record that has them in third place in the NFC East, the Giants need a win to avoid dropping into a tie for last place with the Washington Football Team. But they come into the game on the heels of a big 25-3 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 7.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is having an uncharacteristic season. While he still runs an offense that has scored the league’s eighth-most points, his nine interceptions represent the NFL’s worst mark. In all of 2020, he threw only six — and had the league’s lowest interception percentage. From Week 5 to Week 7, his passer rating has been 75.5 — the worst three-game stretch of his career.

All that might not have mattered if the Kansas City defense had been playing better. The defense has allowed 29.0 points per game — ranked 27th in the league — while also ranking last in yards per play (6.6) and 28th in both rushing yards per attempt (4.7) and passer rating allowed (104.0).

But for the Chiefs, the main problem has been turnovers. They lead the league with 17 giveaways while notching only seven takeaways; their turnover margin of -10 is tied for 30th in the league.

Kansas City will be facing a Giants team ranked 23rd in points scored (19.9), 24th in points allowed (25.7), 17th in yards per play allowed (5.6), 19th in rushing yards per attempt allowed (4.4) and 20th in passer rating allowed (99.6). Meanwhile, the team has accumulated nine giveaways and nine takeaways for a turnover margin of zero, which is ranked 16th.

For Kansas City, keys to victory will likely include Mahomes limiting his mistakes — thereby reducing offensive turnovers — and the defense creating some of its own.
