On Wednesday — with Sunday’s AFC championship against the Buffalo Bills looming — almost all of the Kansas City Chiefs for whom we have injury concerns were on the practice field. Cornerback Bashaud Breeland (concussion/shoulder), running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip), cornerback Rashad Fenton (foot) and wide receiver Sammy Watkins (calf) all did some work.
And so did quarterback Patrick Mahomes (concussion/toe), who had to leave Sunday’s Divisional round game against the Cleveland Browns with what appeared to be a concussion.
But this deserves a caveat: Wednesday’s session was a light practice.
“[Wednesday’s] not the biggest part,” head coach Andy Reid told reporters during his post-practice Zoom call. ”[Thursday’s] a bigger practice — a longer practice than today is. [The injured players] all seemed to make it through well. We’ll just see how it goes tomorrow.”
It seemed as if — by accident or design — the Chiefs had arranged their practice schedule to suit the league-mandated concussion protocol that Mahomes and Breeland are required to follow. Reid was asked where Mahomes was in the protocol.
“It’s whatever day we’re in here,” chuckled Reid. “They kind of base it off that. He’s done well up to this point. They just progress you through the days. So today was limited work and no contact — I think — was the schedule for today. And that’s kind of what we’re doing on Wednesday. So it fit in perfect with that.”
The Chiefs first listed Mahomes as a full participant in their initial injury report before revising his status to limited shortly afterward.
FRAGO II: Chiefs can't list Patrick Mahomes as a full participant because he remains in the concussion protocol. Team is issuing a revised injury report reflecting Mahomes as a limited participant.

“He’s in the protocol,” said Reid of Mahomes. “There’s only certain things he can do; it’s a limited basis. But today is a little bit limited practice, so this fit in right to what he could do. He took all the snaps. He feels good. We’re just going to follow this protocol as closely as we can.”
And yes... we said almost all of the injured Chiefs players practiced. Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. (ankle) was held out of Wednesday’s session.
