In the first Los Angeles Chargers game of the season, veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor took all the snaps and was the unquestionable starter. It appeared that he would again be the quarterback to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2, but then first-round, number six overall selection Justin Herbert came out and took the initial snaps.

In the pregame warmups, Taylor had a chest injury that forced him to miss the start. Herbert would lead the Chargers on an eight play, 79-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead right off the bat.

The rookie finished the drive off by scoring his first career touchdown.

In the second quarter, the Chargers announced that Taylor was out for the remainder of the game.
