The Game

For NFL Week 2, the Kansas City Chiefs have their first division game of the season — this one on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers in their brand-new So-Fi Stadium. Kickoff will be at 3:25 (Arrowhead Time) on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on CBS-TV — locally on KCTV/5.

Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the game will be played without fans.

The Chiefs began their season with an impressive 34-20 victory over the Houston Texans — the team they defeated in the Divisional round of the playoffs on the way to winning Super Bowl LIV. After finishing fourth in the AFC West last season, the Chargers opened 2020 by edging out the Cincinnati Bengals 16-13.

Reigning Super Bowl MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes leads the Chiefs. He’s coming off a 211-yard, three-touchdown performance against Houston that earned him a sparkling passer rating of 123.3. After losing longtime starting quarterback Philip Rivers to the Indianapolis Colts in the offseason, the Chargers drafted Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick of the NFL Draft — but then opted to begin the season with tenth-year veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who passed for 208 yards (and no touchdowns) in the season opener.

After reaching the NFC championship game five times (and the Super Bowl once) during his 14-year stint as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid finally won his first Super Bowl ring in his 21st season as a head coach — his seventh with the Chiefs. He returns in 2020 with a new six-year contract. Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn is in his fourth season with the team. He led the Chargers to a 12-4 record and a playoff berth in 2018 — the team’s first playoff appearance since 2013.

The two teams have been division rivals ever since they became charter members of the American Football League in 1960. The games between them have always been hard-fought — and until recently, evenly matched. Through 2012, each had won 52 games over their 105-game series. But since Reid’s arrival in 2013, the Chiefs have a 11-3 record against the Chargers.
