The #Chiefs are finalizing new six-year contracts with coach Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach, tying both to the reigning Super Bowl champs through the 2025 season, per sources.— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 31, 2020
Andy Reid’s new six-year contract with the #Chiefs puts him among the NFL’s highest-paid coaches, per source. Well-deserved for Reid, who won his first Super Bowl in February and is just getting started at age 62.— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) September 1, 2020
The contracts will keep Reid and Veach in Kansas City through the 2025 season.
Reid, 62, and Veach, 42, arrived to Kansas City from the Philadelphia Eagles organization for the 2013 season. As head coach of the Chiefs (112 games), Reid is 77-35 in the regular season, with a 5-5 record in the postseason. The Chiefs have made the playoffs in six of seven seasons, including the Chiefs’ Super Bowl championship in 2019. 2020 will mark Reid’s 22nd year as a head coach.
Veach served the Chiefs as a pro and college personnel analyst (2013-14) and the co-director of player personnel (2015-16) before being named the team’s general manager ahead of the 2017 season. Veach has often been credited with finding quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who became the first player in league history to win an MVP award (2018), Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP (2019) in his first two seasons as an NFL starting quarterback.
This past offseason, Veach managed to come to long-term agreements with key pieces of the championship-winning roster, including Mahomes, defensive tackle Chris Jones and tight end Travis Kelce despite not much salary cap room to work with. Together with his personnel team, Veach found ways to get each critical deal done.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was asked about retaining Veach during a media availability on Saturday.
“Well, we’re very lucky to have Brett as part of our organization,” Hunt said. “You’re exactly right, he’s done an amazing job over last three years of taking a really good roster and turning it into a championship roster and I think it’s a roster now that’s going to have a chance for multiple years to be a contender for the Super Bowl. He’s done an outstanding job. He works extremely well with coach Reid, he also has a great rapport with our players, so he’s somebody that we want here for the long term. We tend to not talk about contract extensions until they’re done, but just to suffice it, I’d say that we’re fortunate to have Brett here and hope he’s here a very long time.”
The best part for the Chiefs? These two deals don’t count against their salary cap.
