This year’s edition of Madden — “Madden NFL 21” — is set to be released for PC, Playstation 4 and X-Box One on August 28. And thus it is the time of year when EA Sports will build hype by slowly trickling out player ratings.
As of this writing, seven Kansas City Chiefs player ratings have been announced, including four rating for probable or potential starters, which we will cover in this post.
QB Patrick Mahomes - 99 overall
Mahomes is part of this year’s “Madden 99 Club,” along with Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore, Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey and New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas. Mahomes’ 99 overall includes 97 ratings for awareness, throwing power, short-pass throwing accuracy and throwing on the run. Mahomes is the game’s top quarterback, in front of Seattle’s Russell Wilson (97) and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson (94).

S Tyrann Mathieu - 93 overall
Mathieu checks into this year’s Madden game with a 93 overall rating, highlighted by a 95 awareness rating and 93 change-of-direction. Mathieu didn’t seem to agree with his rating.
I should be 97.

As ESPN’s Sportscenter noted in its tweet, Minnesota’s Harrison Smith is the only safety in the game with a better rating than Mathieu at 95.

DT Chris Jones - 92 overall
The newly-extended defensive tackle for the Chiefs is one rating point behind Mathieu at 92. Jones, like Mathieu, is rated 95 for awareness, but he also offers a 95 power move. Jones is the seventh-best defensive lineman in the game.
Poll
Do you agree with Jones’ 92 overall rating?
RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - 74 overall
Despite the hype and excitement surrounding Edwards-Helaire, Madden rated him a 74 overall. This is not all that surprising given how EA Sports typically handles rookies. I’m dating myself here, but young gamers are fortunate in the fact that ratings are updated all season. When I played Madden as a kid, I had to wait an entire year for the new game to come out to see a player’s rating improve. I expect Edwards-Helaire’s rating to be updated very soon into the 2020 season. As of this writing, he is an 86 speed and 89 acceleration. He only has a 69 catch rating.
