With a social media post on Monday night, NBA superstar LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers announced that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is adding his support to James’ “More Than a Vote” voter registration initiative.
“And... everyone welcome this game changer (on and off the field) Patrick Mahomes to the family,” said James posted on Twitter. “Means a lot my Brother to have your voice in this with us.”
Mahomes responded with a tweet of his own., saying, “Change isn’t made by watching from the sidelines. Let’s do this @KingJames.”
Since Mahomes and teammate Tyrann Mathieu are already developing a voter registration initiative of their own, it should not be surprising that Mahomes wants to stand with James on his. Mahomes and James are arguably the most visible players in their respective leagues; if these two MVP athletes are unable to use their influence to raise awareness about voter registration, it cannot be done by professional athletes.
According to its web site (MoreThanAVote.org), James’ initiative is primarily focused on issues relating to Black voters.
“We are Black athletes and artists working together. Our priority right now is combating systemic, racist voter suppression by educating, energizing, and protecting our community in 2020.”
