Patrick Mahomes: ‘I didn’t learn to read defenses until last year’

In a clip from his upcoming appearance on an HBO series this Saturday, the Chiefs quarterback is raising some eyebrows.

As we told you on Monday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be appearing on HBO’s “The Shop: Uninterrupted” on Saturday night.

In a clip of Saturday’s episode released by HBO, the Super Bowl MVP first notes that he’s only been playing quarterback for six years — much to the surprise of fellow guests — and says that it wasn’t until this past season that he really learned how to read defenses.

“I literally didn’t understand how to read defenses until like halfway through last year,” he said. “I understood coverages, but how to be able to pick up little tendencies defenses do — stuff that [Tom] Brady and them have done, they know it and they just go do it — I was just playing. This year, I could actually recognize more and more stuff.

“And I think the more experience — and the more I learn — then I’ll be able to go out there and call plays and do that different stuff because I’ve seen it,” he continued. “I still think there’s a long way for me to go there. And that’s where mentally, I can get better. Physically, I feel like I’ve done a lot of stuff — I always work on the fundamentals and doing that stuff — but I think mentally, I can still take my game to a whole ‘nother level.”

Wow.

Along with Mahomes, host Maverick Carter is joined in this week’s episode by Chadwick Boseman, Trae Young, Roddy Ricch, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Stoute and Paul Rivera. The show first airs at 9 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on HBO.
