Five Remaining Free Agents That Could Help the Chiefs

See the source image

This post assumes the Chiefs work something out with Chris Jones and Sammy Watkins, freeing up enough cap space to sign two or three more reasonably priced second to third tier free agents. I see the players below as somewhere in the 3 to 6 million dollar range type guys for 2020. I'm no GM, so maybe I'm off on my values, but I give my reasons below.

Free Agent #1 - Everson Griffen

Bio from NFL.com

Height: 6-3 Weight: 273 Age: 32

Born: 12/22/1987 Avondale , AZ

College: USC

Experience: 11th season

A recent cap casualty of the Vikings, Griffen can still play. He is a big, strong DE that would fit in nicely with Clark, Okafor, and company. Yes, he is a bit old, but so was Terrell Suggs. How did that work out? If he signed a deal similar to Okafor, he could land somewhere in the six million range. This is your 2020 Emmanuel Ogbah.

Free Agent #2 - Mark Barron

Bio from NFL.com

Height: 6-2 Weight: 230 Age: 30

Born: 10/27/1989 Mobile , AL

College: Alabama

Experience: 9th season

High School: St. Paul's Episcopal School

If there is one thing the Steelers are good at producing, it is linebackers. Barron was an effective player that the fan base was not excited about seeing leave. The primary reason he didn't get more playing time was because of how deep the Steelers are at the position and their recent #1 pick of Devin Bush. He could challenge for a starting role with Hitchens, or at the least be a solid rotational guy. I'd estimate him as a 3 to 5 million per year type guy.

Free Agent #3 - Devonta Freeman

Bio from NFL.com:

Height: 5-8 Weight: 206 Age: 28

Born: 3/15/1992 Baxley , GA

College: Florida State

Experience: 7th season

This to me could be the Lesean McCoy of 2020, only better. Freeman could fit in well in the Chiefs offense that likes to pass to it's backs. He is hitting the Falcons for 6 million in dead cap for 2020. If he did a one year deal at 3 to 4 million given what he is getting from the Falcons, he could try to play himself into a bigger deal next year.

Free Agent #4 - Trumaine Johnson

Bio from NFL.com:

Height: 6-2 Weight: 213 Age: 30

Born: 1/1/1990 Stockton , CA

College: Montana

Experience: 9th season

Yes, he had a terrible year last season. However, he had several years before that where he was playing at a very high level. He could make a very solid #2 across from Ward if he takes to the leadership and coaching the Chiefs have on defense. Much like Freeman, if he is looking for a one year prove it deal, the salary could work. He is killing the Jets for 12 million in dead money. The Chiefs could take advantage of that and hopefully get him at a good rate.

Free Agent #5 - Mike Daniels

Bio from NFL.com

Height: 6-0 Weight: 310 Age: 30

Born: 5/5/1989 Stratford , NJ

College: Iowa

Experience: 9th season

Daniels was a productive and disruptive lineman for the Packers. He was good against the run and the pass. He was simply a cap casualty. He would be a solid veteran rotational player on the line. He might be had for something in the five million per year range.
