The Game

The Kansas City Chiefs face the Denver Broncos in an AFC West matchup on Sunday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:20 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be broadcast on NBC — locally on KSHB/41.

The Chiefs — now on the verge of clinching their fifth-straight AFC West championship — come into this game with a 10-1 record. A week ago, they claimed their sixth-straight victory by outlasting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-24 in Florida. The Broncos now hold third place in the division, coming off a 31-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints that dropped their record to 4-7.

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes leads the Chiefs offense. Now the odds-on favorite to be named the NFL’s MVP in 2020, he leads the league in passing yards (3,497), interception rate (0.5%) and net passing yards per attempt (7.83). After exceeding the qualifying number of 1,500 career attempts against the Buccaneers, he is now the NFL’s all-time career leader in passer rating (100.7).

After a promising 2019 rookie season with the Broncos, former Missouri Tigers quarterback (and Lee’s Summit native) Drew Lock has struggled this season, completing just 55.6% of his passes for 1,767 yards, seven touchdowns and 11 interceptions through eight starts. He (and the rest of the team’s quarterbacks) were on the reserve/COVID list in Week 12, forcing Denver to play practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton at quarterback. Denver does, however, have a strong rushing attack led by former Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman. Together they are averaging 113.5 yards per game.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid continues his 22nd season as an NFL head coach — his eighth in Kansas City. After losing five straight games to the Broncos after arriving in Kansas City, Reid has now won 10 consecutive games against Denver. Longtime NFL defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is now in this second season as the Broncos’ head coach. Fangio has 33 years of NFL coaching experience.

Both teams were charter members of the American Football League in 1960. They’ll be playing their 121st regular-season game. With a victory, the Chiefs would tie their longest winning steak against Denver, which occurred from 1964 through 1969.
