The Game
The Kansas City Chiefs travel to Florida on Sunday to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). The game will be carried on CBS — locally on KCTV/5. Except for the area around Denver, the matchup will be shown nationwide.
The Chiefs come into the game leading the AFC West with a 9-1 record, following a 35-31 victory — their fifth in a row — against the Las Vegas Raiders a week ago. The Buccaneers rank second in the NFC South with a 7-4 record. They’ve lost two of their last three games — most recently a 27-24 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football.
In this game, all eyes will be on the quarterbacks. Tom Brady — the face of the NFL after winning six Super Bowls over a 20-year career with the New England Patriots — joined Tampa Bay in the offseason. The 43-year-old has thrown for 2,955 yards and 25 touchdowns (against nine interceptions) in 2020.
Facing him will be his heir apparent: the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes. Now in his third season as the team’s starter, he’s passed for 3,035 yards and 27 touchdowns (with just two interceptions) so far this season. He’s the leading candidate to be named the NFL’s MVP in 2020 — just as he was in 2018 — and is the reigning Super Bowl MVP. He’ll almost certainly reach 1,500 career attempts on Sunday, entitling him to hold career NFL passing records. He’s very likely to immediately become the NFL’s career leader in passer rating, passing yards per game, adjusted passing yards per attempt and interception percentage.
Two experienced and successful NFL coaches will be facing each other. Now in his eighth season as the Chiefs’ coach, Andy Reid now has a 86-36 record in Kansas City — along with a Super Bowl victory in 2019. In his 22nd season as an NFL head coach, he has 216 regular-season wins — sixth-most in NFL history — and 231 total wins, which ranks fifth.
Bruce Arians — who began his NFL coaching career as running backs coach for the Chiefs under Marty Schottenheimer from 1989 through 1992 — became Tampa Bay’s head coach last season. He’s in his eighth year as a head coach, holding two Super Bowl rings from his time as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2004 through 2011. As a head coach, he took the Arizona Cardinals the NFC Championship in 2015.
The two teams have met just 12 times. The last matchup between them was in 2016, when the Buccaneers defeated the Chiefs 19-17 in Tampa Bay.
