The Game

The Kansas City Chiefs finish their season series with the Las Vegas Raiders with a Week 11 game on Sunday Night Football. Kickoff is set for 7:20 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). The game will be broadcast nationally on NBC — locally on KSHB/41.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the game will be played without fans in attendance.

The Chiefs come into this game leading the AFC West with an 8-1 record — their only loss a 40-32 defeat to the Raiders in Week 5. They’re coming out of their bye week after a narrow 33-31 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 9. With a 6-3 record, the Raiders are right behind Kansas City in the divisional race. They’ve won three straight games — most recently, a 37-12 beatdown of the Denver Broncos.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes — now the front-runner in the race to become 2020’s NFL MVP — is the Chiefs’ offensive leader. He’s thrown for 2,687 yards and 25 touchdowns over nine games, leading the league in adjusted yards per attempt and interception percentage. Now in his seventh year, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr continues to have the best season of his career, having thrown for 2,156 yards and 16 touchdowns against just two interceptions. Carr had his best game of the year when the two teams met in Week 5, throwing for 347 yards and three touchdowns against the stingy Kansas City secondary.

The two head coaches are longtime friends. The Chiefs’ Andy Reid and the Raiders’ Jon Gruden both served as assistant coaches with the Green Bay Packers in the early 1990s. Both have won Super Bowls — Gruden with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2002 season and Reid just last year with Kansas City. Reid is in his eighth season running the Chiefs, while Gruden — now on his second stint with the Raiders — is in his seventh with the Raiders.

Both teams were original franchises of the American Football League is 1960 and have been divisional opponents ever since. Their history together is littered with colorful incidents and meaningful games that have made it one of the league’s most storied rivalries. The Raiders added another chapter to the narrative following their unexpected victory over the Chiefs earlier this season, reportedly taking their team bus on a victory lap around Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs need this win to take full control of the AFC West race — while the Raiders need it in order to maintain an outside chance to win it. The first game between them in the Raiders’ new Las Vegas stadium promises to be memorable.
