Final score: Patrick Mahomes throws five touchdowns as Chiefs beat Jets 35-9

The Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets entered Sunday’s matchup on opposite ends of the spectrum — the defending champions at home taking on the league’s worst team. Both sides lived up to their reputation, as the Chiefs beat the Jets 35-9. The Chiefs improved to 7-1 on the season, and the Jets dropped to 0-8.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went 31 of 42 for 416 yards and five touchdowns in the win.

The Chiefs did not see a third down on their opening possession, marching down the field for 90 yards in seven plays — including 20 yards from running back Le’Veon Bell. The Chiefs took a 7-0 lead on a 30-yard jet sweep from Mahomes to wide receiver Mecole Hardman. Bell had 38 scrimmage yards in his first game against his former team.

Facing fourth-and-4 later in the first quarter, the Chiefs called a fake punt, and punter Tommy Townsend fired a pass to a wide open Byron Pringle 13 yards down the field. On the next play, Mahomes launched a ball 36 yards down the field to Tyreek Hill for a touchdown and a 14-3 lead.

The Chiefs’ final touchdown of the half came as a result of Mahomes under-handing a 3-yard pass to tight end Travis Kelce, who had the most productive day of any Chiefs’ skill-position player. Kelce was Mahomes’ key target on two third-down conversions, and the tight end finished with eight receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown on the day.

The Jets showed an ability to move the ball on the Chiefs defense throughout the first half but had to settle for three field goals. In the closing seconds of the second quarter, their final field goal attempt was blocked.

Mahomes’ fourth touchdown of the game came on a deep third-quarter pass to wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, who came down with the 26-yarder to extend the score to 28-9. His fifth touchdown pass was also Hill’s second — a deep 41-yarder in the fourth quarter to make it 35-9. Hill and Hardman finished with 98 and 96 receiving yards, respectively.

Chiefs rookie defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton registered his first career sack in the second quarter.

Injuries

• Mecole Hardman left the field with a leg injury in the fourth quarter.

Special teams

• Wide receiver Byron Pringle took three kickoffs following last game, when he had a 102-yard return for a touchdown. Wide receiver Mecole Hardman remained on punt return.
• Punter Tommy Townsend successfully completed a fake, a fourth-down pass to Pringle.
• Safety Armani Watts blocked the Jets’ 47-yard field goal attempt in the closing seconds of the first half.
• Kicker Harrison Butker made all five of the Chiefs’ extra points.
