The Game
The Kansas City Chiefs face the New England Patriots at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:05 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on Monday. The game will be broadcast on CBS-TV — locally on KCTV/5.
The game had originally been scheduled for a 3:25 kickoff on Sunday. But on Saturday, news broke that Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton (and Chiefs practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta’amu) had tested positive for COVID-19, causing the NFL to postpone the game until Monday or Tuesday night. Once no more players from either team had turned up positive through continued testing on Saturday and Sunday, the league decided the game would be played on Monday.
However, with at least one positive test on their rosters during the past week, both teams are now subject to game-day COVID-19 testing. If additional infections are revealed, the game could be postponed again.
The Chiefs are 3-0 after a 34-20 road victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. The Patriots stand 2-1 after beating the Las Vegas Raiders 36-20 at home.
The Chiefs offense is led by reigning Super Bowl MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has passed for 898 yards and nine touchdowns (and scored another on the ground) over three games, earning a passer rating of 114.3 on the season. That’s fourth-best in the NFL.
Presumed Patriots starting quarterback Brian Hoyer is now in his 12th NFL season — and his third stint with the Patriots, who signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State in 2009. Hoyer has played for six NFL teams, accumulating a career record of 16-22 as a starter — but over five previous seasons with New England, he has never started a game. Hoyer is backed up by Jarrett Stidham, a former Auburn quarterback whom the Patriots selected in the fourth round (133rd overall) in last spring’s NFL Draft.
Two of the league’s most distinguished (and longest-tenured) head coaches will face each other for the 12th time. Both have more than 200 NFL victories and have been head coaches for more than two decades. The Chiefs’ Andy Reid is only 4-7 all-time against the Patriots’ Bill Belichick — including a loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIV and two postseason losses in Kansas City — but during the regular season, the two coaches have fought to a draw. In their last meeting, the Chiefs earned a 23-16 road win against the Patriots during in Week 14 of 2019.
