Chiefs-Bills: three big takeaways from Week 6

Chiefs had to wait awkwardly until Monday afternoon, but Kansas City went to Orchard Park and beat the Buffalo Bills 26-17. We broke the game down on the AP Laboratory Postgame Show.

Here are three big takeaways from the Chiefs’ fifth win of the season:

Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s best performance

On the heels of the Chiefs adding veteran running back Le’Veon Bell, the rookie running back had his best game running the football of his first campaign — amassing 161 yards on 26 carries. Edwards-Helaire ran with more explosion than we’ve seen to this point — he looked more confident in what he was seeing and ran behind his pads well. Edwards-Helaire rarely goes down on first contact but it felt like he was delivering it Monday night. With Bell coming into the mix, the Chiefs offense continues to build and present more problems to defenses.

The offensive line shuffles, succeeds

Center Daniel Kilgore got the start over Austin Reiter, right tackle Mitchell Schwartz left after the first series with a back issues and the Chiefs were forced to shuffle things around. The result was the most dominant performance of the season. Mike Remmers replaced Schwartz after starting the game at left guard — and second year player Nick Allegretti stepped in. The results on the ground speak for themselves, as the new-look interior offensive line punished Buffalo to the tune of 245 yards. That interior should get another few weeks moving forward to see if it can replicate what they did on Monday afternoon.

The defense challenged Josh Allen

From jump street, the Chiefs challenged Josh Allen to identify pressure and beat it with his outlets. That proved to be a significant challenge in the rain — as the Chiefs brought more than the Bills had in protection and got people in Allen’s face. It’s undeniable that Allen has grown in his three-year career and is worth the major investment the Bills made in him, but he had his issues with ball placement all night. Outside of one series in which the Chiefs played off and soft as Allen drove down the field with little resistance, Allen was poor. What’s more — the run defense was efficient for most of the game. A positive sign moving forward.
