The Game

The Kansas City Chiefs face their second divisional opponent of the season as the Las Vegas Raiders come to Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 Noon (Arrowhead Time) on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on CBS-TV — locally on KCTV/5.

The Chiefs enter the game with a 4-0 record as they continue their defense of their 2019 championship. On Monday night, they defeated the New England Patriots 26-10 at home. The Raiders stand 2-2 after a 30-23 home loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Chiefs offense is led by reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, who has thrown for 1,134 yards (and 11 touchdowns) through four games. He has yet to throw an interception in 2020, and no NFL quarterback has been sacked less often. His passer rating of 114.1 is the league’s fourth-best.

Now in his seventh season, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is having a career year, ranking right behind Mahomes with a passer rating of 113.6. He’s thrown for 1,095 yards (along with eight touchdowns) and also has yet to throw a pick. But he has tended to be at his worst against the Chiefs. His passer rating in 12 career games against Kansas City is just 74.6 — including 13 interceptions.

The head coaches know each other well; both served on the coaching staff of the Green Bay Packers in the early 1990s — and both have Super Bowl championships under their belts. The Chiefs’ Andy Reid won Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers in February; Jon Gruden won Super Bowl XXXLII (against the Raiders, no less) as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2002 season. Reid is in his 22nd year as an NFL head coach — his eighth with the Chiefs. Gruden is in his 14th season leading an NFL team — and is now in his second stint as Raiders head coach. Before joining Tampa Bay, he led the club from 1998 through 2001 — and left a broadcasting career to return to the Raiders in 2018.

The two franchises were charter members of the original American Football League, and have been bitter division rivals in every season they have played. Through the 2012 season, the Chiefs held a 53-50-2 edge against the Raiders. But since Reid arrived in Kansas City, the Chiefs are 12-2 — including four consecutive wins since Gruden returned as Raiders head coach.
