The Kansas City Chiefs came back after being down 24-0 in the first quarter to defeat the Houston Texans in the Divisional round matchup at Arrowhead Stadium.
OFFENSE
First half
First drive: The Chiefs started with a 3-yard run by Damien Williams. After a false start penalty and a 6-yard catch from Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs faced third-and-6 and failed to covert after a Travis Kelce drop. The Chiefs punt was blocked and Texans returned it for a touchdown. Texans 14, Chiefs 0
Second drive: The first play of the drive was a 17-yard pass to Tyreek Hill. After a run for no gain from Williams, Kelce took a short pass for 15 yards after the catch. After an incomplete pass and another short catch from Kelce, the Chiefs failed to convert on third-and-5 thanks to another drop. The Chiefs punted.
Third drive: The Chiefs started the drive with two dropped passes from Williams and DeMarcus Robinson. An incomplete pass to Hill on third down forced the Chiefs to punt for the third drive in a row.
Fourth drive: The first play of the drive was a 25-yard pass to Kelce. Patrick Mahomes followed it up with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Williams. Texans 24, Chiefs 7
Fifth drive: The first play of the drive was an incomplete pass to Hardman. After a pass interference penalty gave the Chiefs goal-to-go, Kelce caught a 5-yard pass for a touchdown. Texans 24 Chiefs 14.
Sixth drive: After a 2-yard pass to Kelce and a run for a loss from Williams, Mahomes went back to Kelce, who caught a 6-yard pass for his second touchdown of the game. Texans 24, Chiefs 21
Seventh drive: The drive started with another pass interference call against the Texans. On the next play, Hill caught a pass for 20 yards . Mahomes scrambled for 21 yards to put the Chiefs into field goal range. After a reverse lost five yards, Kelce caught a pass for 20 yards. Mahomes scrambled for another 14 yards on the next play. After two incomplete passes, the Chiefs faced third-and-5, converting with another Kelce touchdown catch. Chiefs 28, Texans 24
Second half
Eighth drive: The first play of the half was an 11-yard catch and run from Deon Yelder. Sammy Watkins took a pass 48 yards a couple of plays later, and Mahomes ran for another 16 yards. A 4-yard run from Hill gave the Chiefs goal to go. Mahomes scrambled for seven yards to get the first down, and Williams ran it in on the next play for a touchdown. Chiefs 34 Texans 24
Ninth drive: The drive began with a 28-yard catch from Kelce, followed by a 14-yard run from Watkins. Another pass interference call gave the Chiefs goal to go. After two incomplete passes and a false start penalty, the Chiefs faced third-and-goal. But the Texans got a holding penalty on the next play, giving the Chiefs another set of downs. Williams ran it in for a 5-yard touchdown. Chiefs 41, Texans 24
Tenth drive: The first play was a 23-yard catch by Kelce. Hardman took a jet sweep for 13 yards. Watkins caught a pass for 28 yards, and Blake Bell followed with a 8-yard touchdown catch. Chiefs 48, Texans 31
Eleventh drive: Bell started the drive with a 7-yard catch. Williams ran for 11 yards on the next play and followed it up with a 26-yard run. After a 4-yard run from Hill and an incomplete pass, the Chiefs faced third-and-6 and couldn’t convert. The Chiefs settled for a field goal. Chiefs 51. Texans 31
Twelfth drive: The Chiefs ran it for three straight plays for a one yard gain and punted.

DEFENSE
First half
First drive: The first play of the game was a quick pass to De’Andre Hopkins that gained a yard. Carlos Hyde followed it up with a 2-yard run and Will Fuller was able to convert the first down with a 9-yard catch. A short catch and a 7-yard Hyde run gave the Texans third-and-short. But then Kenny Stills got behind the Chiefs defenders and was wide open for a 54-yard touchdown catch. Texans 7, Chiefs 0
Second drive: The drive started an 11-yard run from Duke Johnson. A catch from Fuller put the Texans into Chiefs territory. After a short catch and an incomplete pass, the Texans failed to convert on third-and-11 Frank Clark sacked Deshaun Watson. The Texans punted, but a Hill fumble gave the Texans back possession at the Chiefs 6-yard line. After a 2-yard rush Watson, Darren Fells caught a 4-yard touchdown pass to extend the Texans lead. Texans 21, Chiefs 0
Third drive: Hyde started the drive with Hyde runs for seven and two yards. Then a holding penalty on the Texans forced 3rd-and-11 that Watson converted with a 13-yard pass to Hopkins. A 16-yard catch from Stills put the Texans into the red zone. After a short run and an incomplete pass, the Texans fell just short of converting third-and-9 and settled for a field goal. Texans 24, Chiefs 0
Fourth drive: Hyde ran for five yards to start the drive. After another Hyde run for a yard, the Texans couldn’t convert on third-and-4. The Texans tried a fake punt but failed to convert, giving the Chiefs possession.
Fifth drive: The first play of the drive was a 9-yard catch from Hopkins. Watson ran the ball for 10 yards and Hyde caught a pass for 10 yards. After a short run from Hyde and a pass that lost two yards, the Texans faced third-and-12, failing convert thanks to a pass breakup from Tyran Mathieu. The Texans punted.
Sixth drive: The first play of the drive was a 38-yard catch from Hopkins. After a spike to stop the clock and an incomplete pass, Watson ran for six yards to put the Texans into field goal range. The field goal attempt just before the half was wide.
Second half
Seventh drive: The Texans started the drive with an illegal formation penalty. Hopkins then caught a pass for nine yards. After a short run from Hyde, the Texans were at third-and-5 and failed to convert when Clark notched his second sack of the day. The Texans punted.
Eighth drive: The drive began with a 21-yard pass to Hopkins. After an incomplete pass, Fuller caught an 11-yard to put the Texans into Chiefs territory. After a 4-yard run and an incomplete pass, the Texans converted third-and-6 with a 9-yard catch. Then Stills was sacked on a reverse for a 14-yard loss, but Fuller made up for it with a 39-yard catch. Watson ran it in for a 5-yard touchdown. Chiefs 41, Texans 31
Ninth drive: Jordan Thomas started the drive with a 7-yard catch. Hopkins followed up with a 20-yard reception. After a 6-yard run — and a nearly intercepted pass — the Texans failed to convert on third-and-4. The Texans went for it on fourth down. A pass deflection from Rashad Fenton ended the drive.
Tenth drive: Mathieu broke up a pass to start the drive. Watson scrambled to give the Texans third-and-3, but Stills dropped a pass, to force the Texans to go for it on fourth down. The Texans converted with an 11-yard pass to Johnson. A couple of plays later, Mathieu was called for pass interference — but another dropped pass and a Dorian O’Daniel sack gave the Texans third-and-11. The Texans gained nine yards, forcing them to once again go for it on fourth down. An incomplete pass to Hopkins gives the Chiefs possession.
Eleventh drive: Watson started the drive with a 9-yard pass to Johnson. Watson completed a 30-yard pass to Fuller a few plays later, following it up with a 17-yard pass to DeAndre Carter. After two incomplete passes, the Texans faced third-and-goal. Brashaud Breeland broke up the pass to force fourth down. Clarke got his third sack of the game to give the Chiefs possession.
SPECIAL TEAMS
- Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown.
- Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill fumble a return and the Texans recovered to gain possession.
- Chiefs returner Mecole Hardman returned a kickoff 58 yards.
- Daniel Sorenson forced a fumble on a kickoff in the second quarter to give the Chiefs possession.
INJURIES
- Texans right tackle Chris Clark was injured in the team’s opening drive with what was described as an ankle injury. He returned later in the first quarter.
- Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce left the game in the third quarter due to a hamstring injury, but returned later in the quarter.
