The game
The Kansas City Chiefs open their 2019 campaign against the Jacksonville Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville. Kickoff is set for Noon (Arrowhead Time) on Sunday. The game will be carried by CBS — locally on KCTV-5.
The Chiefs are coming off their first trip to the AFC Championship game since 1993. While the team failed to reach the Super Bowl last season, they did win their third consecutive AFC West title and entered the playoffs as the AFC’s first seed — thanks in no small part to the heroics of first-year starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, whose spectacular season landed him the NFL MVP award for 2018.
The Jaguars are coming off a disappointing 5-11 season that landed them in the cellar of the AFC South. Starting the season 3-1 — including a 31-20 defeat of the New England Patriots in Week 2 — the Jaguars then dropped seven straight games, putting them out of serious playoff contention by Week 12. But the Jaguars have new hope for 2019 with a new quarterback: former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, who came to the team during the offseason.
For the Chiefs, Andy Reid is entering is seventh season as the team’s head coach — and his 21st as the head coach of an NFL team. He’s compiled a record of 65-31 in Kansas City, and his teams have made the playoffs in five of the last six seasons.
The Jaguars’ Doug Marrone is entering his fifth season as an NFL head coach — his third in Jacksonville. He’s 16-18 during his two full seasons as the team’s head coach and has taken them to the playoffs once.
The two teams last faced each other during Week 5 of 2018. The Chiefs won that game 30-14 at Arrowhead Stadium. The last time the Chiefs played in Jacksonville was in 2013’s season opener — Andy Reid’s first outing as head coach — exactly six years before Sunday’s game. The Chiefs won that game 28-2. Dating back to 2010, the Chiefs have won four straight against the Jaguars.
