Jaguars sign Chase Litton to practice squad, change schedule

The Jaguars have brought the former Chiefs quarterback in ahead of their upcoming game on Sunday.

Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Chase Litton was signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad on Monday, the team announced via their official Twitter account.

Litton, 23, spent 2018 on the Chiefs practice squad and was beat out by rookie Kyle Shurmur for that spot this training camp and preseason.

The timing of the move by the Jaguars is curious. Especially as a quarterback, Litton is familiar with the Chiefs playbook and can now share some information with the Jaguars ahead of the game on Sunday.

What he likely won’t know is much about the precise Jaguars game plan. Litton was getting ready to play in the fourth preseason game against the Packers while many of the Chiefs had turned the page to Jacksonville.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s words about backup Matt Moore from August 30 are also telling.

“I think he is going to be okay whether we do or not, I think he’s going to be OK,” Reid said of Moore. “He’s a sharp guy, he’s been doing this a long time and he kind of gets it. This is what you have to understand, we put in all these plays during training camp, but once you get in the game week, you cut it way back. It’s a little easier to digest than when you look at that full training camp sheet, you look at that and think my goodness, how am I going to get that figured out? This will be a little more job specific for the Jags and I think he will be fine.”

We’ll find out Sunday if the move pays dividends — and after that, whether or not Litton stays with the team past this week.

Jaguars change practice schedule

Hurricane Dorian is a Category 5 storm that is set to threaten Florida’s coast this week. The city has enforced mandatory evacuations in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas. With that in mind, the Jaguars had to alter their practice schedule this week.

The Jaguars practiced Monday and will have no practice on Tuesday or Wednesday.

“We have a plan in place, and we’re going to go ahead and execute it,” Head Coach Doug Marrone said, via the Jags’ official website. “First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone to make sure everyone’s safe and everyone has a plan. That’s what we’ve been working on with our players. That’s been the biggest thing we’ve been dealing with, making sure of the safety of everyone involved.”

The Jaguars are currently scheduled to resume practice on Thursday, unless weather keeps it from happening.

“If it does get pushed back where we can’t get the players back in here, obviously we’ll reach out to the league and get everyone involved and see what’s best,” Marrone added. “I don’t look at it as we’re losing a practice day. As of right now, we’ll have our work in. I’m concerned about that.”

The Chiefs take on the Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field Sunday at Noon Arrowhead Time.
