The game

The Kansas City Chiefs travel to Ford Field to face the Detroit Lions in a Week 4 inter-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for Noon Arrowhead Time on Sunday. The game will be carried by Fox — locally on WDAF/4.

The Chiefs enter the game 3-0 after defeating the Baltimore Ravens 33-28 at Arrowhead last Sunday. The Lions are 2-0-1 after defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-24 on the road in Week 3. The week before, they defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 13-10 at home. They opened the season with a 27-27 tie against the Arizona Cardinals in Tempe.

The Chiefs, of course, are coming off their third-straight AFC West championship and an appearance in the AFC Championship game. Last season, the Lions finished fourth in the NFC North with a 6-10 record.

Former first-round draft picks will lead both offenses. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named NFL MVP during his first season as a starter and currently leads the NFL in multiple statistical categories — including passer rating, in which Mahomes has posted a stellar 134.9.

Matthew Stafford is entering his 11th NFL season as the Lions’ signal-caller after being selected with the first overall pick of the 2009 draft. Through three games, Stafford has passed for 831 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions — all of which put him on pace to have one of his best seasons. Barring injury, Stafford will exceed 40,000 career passing yards during 2019. Only 20 quarterbacks have ever reached that plateau.

This will be Mahomes’ first career game against the Lions. Stafford is 1-1 against the Chiefs in his career.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is in his 21st season as an NFL head coach. With last week’s victory, Reid passed Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll, moving into sixth place for total career head coaching wins with 210. Lions coach Matt Patricia is in his second year as head coach in Detroit, after spending six seasons as defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots.

The two teams last met in 2015, when the Chiefs defeated the Lions 45-10 at London’s Wembley Stadium — technically a Chiefs home game. Andy Reid has a career record of 4-1 against the Lions, but the Chiefs are 0-2 at Ford Field since it opened in 2002.
