The Game

The Kansas City Chiefs open their home schedule at Arrowhead Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Kickoff is set for Noon and will be carried on CBS — locally on KCTV-5.

Both teams come in to the game undefeated. The Chiefs opened their season with a 40-26 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and a 28-10 win over the Oakland Raiders. The Ravens crushed the Miami Dolphins 59-10 on the road in Week 1 and defeated the Arizona Cardinals 23-17 in their own home opener last week.

The two teams met in Week 14 of last season, when the 7-5 Ravens nearly knocked off the 10-2 Chiefs at Arrowhead. Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston strip-sacked Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson with less than a minute remaining, forcing a 24-24 tie that the Chiefs broke with a Harrison Butker field goal in overtime.

Both teams ended their 2018 seasons as their respective division champions. After finishing 12-4 and landing the top seed in their conference, the Chiefs made it as far as the AFC championship game before falling to the New England Patriots in overtime. The Ravens narrowly lost to the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Both teams also feature young, exciting quarterbacks in their second season as starters. The Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes passed for more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in 2018 — becoming only the third player to accomplish the feat — and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson took over the starting job in Week 10 of last season, establishing himself as a threat as both a passer and a runner. Both quarterbacks are playing superbly in 2019. Jackson comes into the game leading the league in passer rating with a mark of 145.2. Mahomes is in third place with 136.3.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is now in his 21st season as an NFL head coach — his seventh with the Chiefs. Once an assistant coach under Reid during his time as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, John Harbaugh is in his 11th season as head coach of the Ravens.
