Chiefs beat Oakland Raiders 28-10; advance to 2-0

The Kansas City Chiefs started slow — allowing the Oakland Raiders to build up a 10-0 lead in the first quarter — before exploding for 28 points in the second quarter, cruising to a 28-10 victory in Week 2 of the young NFL season.

OFFENSE

First half

• First Drive: Chiefs had a hard time running the ball and only got off five plays before an incomplete pass from Patrick Mahomes to Mecole Hardman forced the Chiefs to punt.
• Second Drive: Chiefs had back-to-back short drives. This drive was only six plays long with miscommunications and ineffective screens forcing them to punt.
• Third Drive: Travis Kelce got shaken up on the first play of the drive, but Mahomes completed a deep pass to DeMarcus Robinson for a 44-yard touchdown. Oakland still led 10-7.
• Fourth Drive: Sammy Watkins caught his first pass of the game for 14 yards. Mahomes then converted a couple of third downs with completed passes to Kelce and Watkins before throwing a 42-yard TD to Hardman on third-and-20.
• Fifth Drive: The Chiefs started at the Oakland six-yard line, but a short pass to Damien Williams went for 32 yards and a 43-yard bomb to Robinson gave the Chiefs breathing room. After a penalty on Cameron Erving, Mahomes completed his third touchdown pass of the day to Kelce. Chiefs led 21-10.
• Sixth Drive: After scoring no points in the first quarter, Mahomes threw his fourth touchdown pass of the quarter with a 39-yard dart to Robinson.

Second Half

• Seventh Drive: Mahomes opened the second half the same way he ended the first — with a long pass to Robinson — but a seven-yard sack on third down forced the Chiefs to punt for the third time.
• Eighth Drive: Mecole Hardman had a 72-yard touchdown called back with a holding penalty and the Chiefs drive ended in six plays.
• Ninth Drive: At the start of the fourth quarter, Kansas City drew a pass interference call to get within field goal range, but a sack-turned-fumble by Mahomes gave the Raiders another chance on offense. It was the third turnover of the half by both teams
• Tenth Drive: A couple of incomplete passes from Mahomes led to a quick Chiefs three-and-out. The Chiefs punted.
• Eleventh Drive: Chiefs offense got their momentum back with a long pass to Kelce for 34 yards on third down, and eventually drained the clock to end the game

DEFENSE

First half

• First Drive: Raiders drove 65 yards, but defensive lineman Chris Jones made a tackle on third-and-one to force a field goal. Raiders took a 3-0 lead.
• Second Drive: Oakland scored after a 43-yard defensive pass interference call on Tyrann Mathieu gave the Raiders first-and-goal. Oakland quarterback Derek Carr zipped it to a wide open to Tyrell Williams for a four-yard touchdown pass.
• Third Drive: The defense had its best drive of the game to that point, forcing a three-and-out and allowing only three yards. Oakland head coach Jon Gruden threw a challenge flag on what he thought was Chiefs pass interference, but the call stood.
• Fourth Drive: The Chiefs forced their second three and out in a row. Raiders punt.
• Fifth Drive: Carr completed a pass that made him the franchise leader in passing yards with 19,090, but the Raiders still went three-and-out.
• Sixth Drive: Jones got a six-yard sack to open the drive, and closed the drive with a tackle for no gain to force the Raiders’ third three-and-out.
• Seventh Drive: The Raiders completed a few passes to get in field goal range, but failed to spike the ball.

Second Half

• Eighth Drive: Raiders opened the drive with a 51-yard run by rookie Josh Jacobs, but Carr threw an interception in the end zone, giving the Chiefs the ball at their 20-yard line.
• Ninth Drive: Six plays into the drive, Charvarius Ward grabbed the Chiefs’ second interception of the day
• Tenth Drive: Raiders penalties led to a fourth-and-long, which gave way to another Oakland three-and-out.
• Eleventh Drive: Derek Carr converted a fourth-and-two on the drive with his legs, but a sack on a corner blitz from Kendall Fuller lead to a third-and-long where Carr was again sacked by Tanoh Kpassagnon.

SPECIAL TEAMS

First Half

• Mecole Hardman returned kicks for the Chiefs, while De’Anthony Thomas returned punts. Thomas fielded a punt at the three-yard line in the second quarter, only returning it to the 15. After a holding penalty, the Chiefs had to start at the 10.

Second Half

• Hardman returned the first punt of the second half for 20 yards and Thomas returned the second for one yard.

• RB Damien Williams left the game in the fourth quarter and did not return.
• Left tackle Eric Fisher left the game after only a few ofensive snaps. He was reported to have reinjured the groin muscle he injured in Friday’s practice.
