The game

In their first AFC West game of the 2019 season, the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Oakland Raiders at the RingCentral Coliseum. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. Arrowhead Time on Sunday. The game will be carried on CBS-TV — locally on KCTV-5.

The Chiefs arrive in Oakland 1-0 after a 40-26 road win against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday. Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill — injured against the Jaguars — will not play. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a sprained ankle in Week 1, but he is expected to play. Wide receiver (and special teams ace) De’Anthony Thomas will return from a Week 1 suspension.

The Raiders also come into this game with a 1-0 record after defeating the Denver Broncos 26-16 in their home opener. Safety Johnathan Abram was injured in the game, and the Raiders have said his season is over. Wide receiver J.J. Nelson is also dealing with an injury and won’t be available for the game.

The Chiefs are the defending AFC West champions after a 12-4 season that led them to the AFC championship against the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. The Raiders finished last in the division with a 4-12 record.

The teams met twice in 2018. The Chiefs won the Week 13 contest in Oakland, 40-33, and then soundly defeated the Raiders 35-3 in the regular season finale at Arrowhead. Since arriving in Kansas City, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is 10-2 against the Raiders — but both losses came at the Coliseum.

Provided that their new stadium is ready, the Raiders will be moving to Las Vegas for the 2020 season. If all goes as planned, this will not only be the last time the Chiefs play at the Coliseum — the last remaining NFL field that is shared with a baseball team — but will also be the last NFL game ever played on a baseball infield. The Raiders won’t play at the Coliseum again until November, when the Oakland Athletics’ season will be completed. So for the Chiefs — and the league — Sunday’s game will mark the end of an era.
